Greenough Street

Greenough Street
Maidwells was a sewing factory but what did they make? Down by the side of the River Douglas was Water Heyes Electrical. The Quality Hotel now occupies this position across from where the famous old Wigan Rugby Ground was, but now is a Tesco Supermarket.

Comment by: L. Banks (Ashton, UK) pre 2009.

Can anybody help me win a bet with my pal. I say there were two electrical shops in Greenough St Stans Radio Shop and Lennigans. Lennigans was a bit more upmarket and Stan sold more bits and pieces like jokes catterpult elastic and multi-coloured elastic bands. My pal says it was the same shop under different owners. kathleen Bridge can you name everybody in your St Georges photo? Joe Barker can you do the same? See you all in the Brocket on St Georges day.

Comment by: J. Gerrard (Ormskirk, UK) pre 2009.

My enduring memory of Greenough St was when my uncle Terry was walking me home from school. He saw his friend bending down tying his shoelace. My uncle promtly "porred" him on his rear. Unfortunately it wasn't his friend - it was Joe Mac. You should have seen the look on uncle Terrys face. I think if I hadn't have been present he would have been chinned. Laugh, I never stopped for two weeks. Even now I can't stop giggling when I think of it. People think I've gone mad.

Kath B. Put your photos on this site on the St Georges page so that we can all have a laugh. I see you have alresdy put a Confirmation photo on of a trip to Liverpool Cathederal. Its a case of the Good Bad and the Ugly. I recognise some of the young scallies Barry Tarbuck, James Hornby and Clifford Higham. Then there is Joe Barker and Tony Bennet. Don't you think Alan Adlington reminds you a bit of Brad Pitt. Then there are the sugar and spices Sheila Connar, Rita Lowe, Joan Brennan and Lois Halsall. I don't remember all the faces. Keep up the good work.

Re: Kath B and Rose Queen. The rose queen lived at the bottom of Great Acre or Vine St in the semi-detached houses. I can not yet recall her name but will enquire of friends. Until you mentioned the Rose Queen I had forgotten all about it. She was a blond slim pretty girl. She had an older brother who wenr to St Georges and I think later the Grammar School. He was a languages teacher who taught English at Wigan Tech and was fluent in German. I will let you know the name when I find out.

Didn't go to St Georges school but will get in the Brocket on St Georges day for a laugh cheers Ginger. Does anyone remeber Marsh Lane it ran from Greenough St to Standishgate past St Georges church. It was the oldest property I recall in Wigan. Most of the folk were relocated to Marsh Green when it was demolished. I used to go there a lot in the 50s but I only remeber two lads Keith West and Edward Hutchinson. Anyone know what became of them.

Been reading with interest how many with memories of Greenough St have a connection with st Georges school. Why not meet up on St Georges day 23rd April - say at the Brocket Arms in Mesnes Rd at 7pm. No need for inroductions just good fun seeing who turns up.

Hi all. Reading your memories takes me back. As kids in the 50s we had a hideout in the woodyard near St Georges School. It was a gap indside the stacked planks of wood. Things we got up to. I recall little Sheila from Turner St and Janet. The lads were a load of scallies. Wont mention names cos they are probably in the Wigan mafia if not the Chicago mafia. Great memeories though.

Hi Colin Mitchinson, it sounds like it was Ken that I knew. It's such a long time ago, it's difficult to remember everyone, isn't it? I remember Barbara quite well, she was a lovely girl. Thanks for the good wishes, and have a good 2007.

Comment by: Colin Mitchinson (Wigan, England) pre 2009.

Message for Jim Fairhurst. Sorry Jim but your name does not immediately come to mind although it was a long time ago. I remember an Anthony Fairhurst in my class at St Johns. Is he any relation. I did have an elder sister and brother, Barbara and Ken. Sadly Barbara died in December 1963. I have asked the site to put some photographs on taken on Whit Monday 1961 during the walking day and another of the 3 of us behind the chip shop. They are a little faded but maybe you recognise one of us or maybe someone in the photos recognises themselves and will get in touch. If it helps, other people in my class at St Johns were Terry Lloyd (I am still in touch with him) Jane Ashurst, Louise Green, Rosalind Walters, Nicholas Fisher, Francis Worthington, Carl Prior, John Sharkey, Peter Robinson and John and Helen Taylor. Do you or anyone else recognise any of the names. If not it was worth a try. All the best for the new year. Colin Mitchinson

Comment by: Jim Fairhurst (Fleetwood, England) pre 2009.

To Colin Mitchinson, Colin, I think we went to school together. The chips from your chippy were much better than from the one opposite. I remember your sister as well.

Comment by: Colin Mitchinson (Wigan, England) pre 2009.

Just discovered this amazing site. The memories come flooding back. I lived at 54 Greenhough Street in the early 60s. This was in fact one of the chip shops (Mitchinsons)mentioned by Jim From Fleetwood. I also went to St Johns School in Brick Kiln Lane. I was there when the dreaded Mrs Benson first came to the school. The piercing stare over the top of the glasses would stop anyone in their tracks. Miss Murphy used to get me to call at a grocers at the top end of scholes every Friday to drop off her order for which she paid me sixpence. I remember Mr Rynn because his daughter Judith was in our class. Sister Christine was the head mistress. Does anyone remember a teacher in the infants by the name of Miss Joyce. She was great. Going back to Greenough Street there are some pictures that I can dig out taken from outside the chippy of the walking day in 1961. Once I figure out how to do it I will put them on. Can I say thanks to all who have taken the time to contribute to the site. Nostalga is a wonderful thing

My mate Julie Holmes used to work at a little hairdressers on the right side of Greenought St. further down from the bike shop, The RSPCA had an office there too later. AN old pakistani guy used to live in a flat over the hairdressers--always carried a briefcase--too bad it's all gone

I have been reading the memories with great interest having been born just off Greenough Street near St Georges school. I recall the names Alan Adlington and Tarbuck. I think the lad I remember was named Barry probably a brother of the other Tarbucks. I think they all went to St Georges school. I remember the young scallies dressing up as Guy Fawks on the corner of Turner St and cadging coppers from the passers by. Good memories, pity the community has now gone.

Tom Porter remembers Cedric Tarbuck. Cedric is my brother and he went to Austalia around 45 years ago. It cost him £10 and if he didnt like it, he could come back! He stopped there and is now married to a lovely chinese woman and has two sons who are both pilots. I also remember Kate Conroy, Pats sister,Pat went out with my oldest brother Horace. Reply Derek /congregating around the stocking factory -I used to think those Convent girls were the "bee's knees". Two of them lived facing the "breid" one had blonde hair and I used to think she was the spitting image of Doris Day! I think her mother was called Bridget. They seemed so grown up to me and my friend. They must only have been about 5 years older than us. Just because they went to the convent it was ok to hang about - if it had been anybody else - ordinary school kids we would probably have been shifted!!!When it was my turn to hang about corners we went to a street just off Scholefield Lane. I think Blackburn's coal yard was just opposite. Also an off-licence on Lorne St was another place. One night a lad pulled me by my scarf and then let go and I went through the window. Everybody scattered except me left in the window to face the shopkeeper. The others ran inside St Catharine's churchyard hiding behind the grave stones I think! Anyway a lot of empty bottles were taken back for money to pay for the damage!! Great days!

I won't mention any other names for fear of reprisals!! Re. the header picture on this page: The corner shop on the left they are approaching was Tickles the Printers, just out of shot to their left was the gents urinals painted corporation green mentioned in an earlier reply --- in between was the riverside path down to the other bridge. The urinals were only half roofed, but shin up onto the Duggy bridge wall and then on to the roof top was pole position for watching the Whit Monday walks over the crowds heads as the came up from the Market square.
