Greenough Street

Greenough Street
Maidwells was a sewing factory but what did they make? Down by the side of the River Douglas was Water Heyes Electrical. The Quality Hotel now occupies this position across from where the famous old Wigan Rugby Ground was, but now is a Tesco Supermarket.

Comment by: Margaret (Wigan, Lancashire) pre 2009.

Dicky Mears was mentioned having a barbers on Greenough Street, he was my husbands Uncle by marriage. I would like to ask anyone do they remember a barber on Greenough street called Alexander Dolan, his father Daniel was a barber in scholes back in 1901.

Comment by: Barry Higham (Pemberton, England) pre 2009.

Kath Byrnes memo about spuds falling in the lob reminded me. Me and our kid used to go to my aunties in Greenough Street on Saturdays. We always had lobbies for dinner. Best I ever tasted. Do you know lobscowse is a Scandinavian word. Not many folks know that. Scowsers got their name from the stew, meat, onions, carrots and spuds. There is a cafe in Grafton Street, Scowseland that specialises in scowse. Now Wigan Wooly Backs or more precisely Scowzers from Scholes preferred lobbies, spuds, beef and onion stew. With a bit of brown sauce - great! Dip your butty.

Comment by: V. Potter (Wigan, England) pre 2009.

Regarding N. Ashurst I vaguely remember a street trader with a similar call. I don't know the name but he was a fishmonger. I have a memory of man leading his horse and cart, looking rather like the TV character Claude Greengrass with a large mac or overcoat and a floppy trilby. Of course, those days there were many street traders. I remember a green grocer named Fred Griffiths, his wife Fanny had a greengrocers shop in Bolton street. There was an old woman who sold salt from a hand cart. Milk in metal canisters sold from horsedrawn carts and many rag and bone men. I think there was a rag and bone man in Windsor Street called Hart but it's a shot in the dark.

Comment by: N. Ashurst (Wigan, England) pre 2009.

uLiving only a few yards from Greenough St and growing up in the fifties I recall the street traders. You never see any now. 7 am my mam would shout upstairs "get up - its half past seven you'll be late for school". She did that every school day - why I don't know cos I always knew the time. As I lay awake for a while before getting up I would hear a street cry, somthing like, "Fraaays.....kipperrrs....cod....". It was an eerie cry, sounded miles away, and I never knew or saw who it was.

Hi Cliff, the song "Blue Moon of Kentucky" is Kentucky's official state bluegrass song. It was written in 1947 by Bill Monroe, from Rosine town, West Kentucky. The song continues “Blue moon of Kentucky keep on shining……………” Seeing that your AKA Bluemoon I think if you keep on shining you’ll brighten the readers days. Anyway as ol’ Kintuck aint about Greenough Street I’d better move on. Bye now.

Can anybody help me win a bet with my pal. I say there were two electrical shops in Greenough St Stans Radio Shop and Lennigans. Lennigans was a bit more upmarket and Stan sold more bits and pieces like jokes catterpult elastic and multi-coloured elastic bands. My pal says it was the same shop under different owners. kathleen Bridge can you name everybody in your St Georges photo? Joe Barker can you do the same? See you all in the Brocket on St Georges day.

Comment by: J. Gerrard (Ormskirk, UK) pre 2009.

My enduring memory of Greenough St was when my uncle Terry was walking me home from school. He saw his friend bending down tying his shoelace. My uncle promtly "porred" him on his rear. Unfortunately it wasn't his friend - it was Joe Mac. You should have seen the look on uncle Terrys face. I think if I hadn't have been present he would have been chinned. Laugh, I never stopped for two weeks. Even now I can't stop giggling when I think of it. People think I've gone mad.
