HI Tommy T, Have you watched the BBC News this morning? What do you think Russia is up to, Are they going to walk into the Ukraine like old one ball did with Austria in 1930?

From what I've just read, with all the weapons they now have, it won't be a walk in, and I don't think they'll not use them.......This situation is very dangerous for world peace imo.

I'm not sure. Lavrov has agreed to a further week but wars are expensive. Europe is weak at the moment recovering from shutdown (it's own fault) crashing the economies and we don't know how Russia fared in the pandemic. Russia is vulnerable to confiscation of its assets, whether it be from laundered money, football teams, assets in banks, property, etc. all over the world.
Never can be sure of Russia's economy, it does rely heavily on hard currencies, but Europe should not have tried its expansionism.
We'll see whether all these migrants are ready to fight for Queen and Country.

Well said, Golden Bear.

Ukraine is flirting with membership in NATO. To Russia that means the threat of European nukes on its borders. Would you want the Russians to put nukes in the Channel Islands? Would we want them to put nukes in Mexico?

Russia is reacting responsibly. Every leader needs to put his own country first. NATO should back off, permanently. Ukraine is a thoroughly corrupt country - on a par with my own country at the moment - and needs to solve its own problems. We do not need to risk the lives of British or American soldiers.

I think that Russia is sabre rattling, because if they had wanted to invade Ukraine, they would have done it by now, so what does Russia want ?

It wants NATO to not allow Ukraine to join NATO, that is a red line for Russia.

It wants to sell its gas and oil, without interference, without sanctions, without quotas, tariffs, and Germany being told by America not to accept gas from Russia, along a new gas pipeline, which has been completed, but Germany won't switch it on.

Russia has become wealthy by selling gas and oil to Western Europe, and countries like Ukraine, and they have used that wealth modernise their armed forces, to which they are using those modernised weapons to intimidate the West and NATO, playing to the domestic Russian audience, the older ones who remember the power which the old Soviet Yoonion had, but Russia enjoys being wealthy, but they 'need' the West to buy their oil and gas from them.

Ukraine supplies Russia with food, Russia supplies Ukraine with gas, and Russia is content with that, but Ukraine is looking to the West, they want to join the EU and NATO, Russia thinks that if that happens, like minded people in Russia will want the same for Russia, and that will cause domestic problems in Russia, and there already have been riots by groups wanting more freedoms and democracy, like there is in the West.

So basically Putin thinks that if Ukraine joins the EU and NATO, then it will only be a matter of time, before Russia does the same, and Putin and his allies do not want to lose the present power they wield in Russia.

Ukraine has always been a buffer between east and west, and, in my view, should stay so. They are miffed a bit because Germany refused to sell them weapons on the basis it would not be appropriate to do so, but then sold weapons to Estonia!

Russia is protecting its borders and as someone once said, in Russia's views it protects its borders providing Russians are on both sides of them.

And The Mirror says that a quarter of Ministers in our current government are in receipt of moneys from Russia!

I guess that means we have been sold out by our own, before any difficulties begin.

The ordinary Russian people may suffer from sanctions.
The ordinary British person might suffer also.

But it seems that Russian oligarchs and English plutocrats will be well insulated from adverse effects.

It is a funny way to wage a war

On GB News last week an ex British Army chap, said that the first thing you knew when Russia had done something militarily, was after they had already done it, just like when they invaded the Crimea.

The West, as in us, are itching to impose sanctions on Russia, because the West knows that it will hurt Russia, I mean have you ever heard the phrase " a kick in the pocket is a lot worse than a kick in the **** "

The war up to now seems to have been a war of 'disinformation' waged by Russia on NATO, and the world, and Russia are winning it.

Russian military occupation of Hungary in 1956.
Russian military occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968

Both followed the same pattern of invasion occurring following alleged withdrawal of Russian forces.

It is not even true in respect of their occupation of Crimea. (see Wiki for timeline)

Most have fled - into Russia!

It was on the news today, a bloke 'in the know' being interviewed, he said, "Nato countries want to intervene, but they can't as that would mean all Europe and US being at war with Russia."

Well, yes, of course it would. But, the real reason is, if Nato countries did intervene, Putin would carry out his threat and send nuclear missiles out accordingly.
And, this means that he's holding the rest of the World to ransom.
Nobody is going to stop him, because they can't and they know they can't.

Russia are the undisputed Cock of the World now!

My last day in Cheetham Hill was New Year's Eve, 1979. Had been at a friend's new year party, where we all spilled out at midnight to the sounds of all the ships hooting in the docks. So that is something gone forever.

Lived in a number of places, from Littleborough in NE, to Bramhall in SW. Though Didsbury probably my favourite.

I was with someone that I really loved, so memories, alas are rose tinted.

I loved 'The Royal Exchange'. University's English department used to do a workshop on prior Wednesday when they ran a Shakespeare play. Usually went to the final dress rehearsal rather than the normal performances.

I know it has all changed. Often look on Google street view, and I no longer recognize owt.

I am only in Yorkshire, but have health issues and other stuff making moving unlikely.

(Delauney's Road) Formerly three separate hospitals: Springfield (Psych), Crumpsall (Gen Hosp) and Delauney's (Geriatric) they merged together into one very large Hospital. It is smaller now, shorn of the geriatric, and of most of the psych wards.

Thanks for pointing out that a google map page does not work as an image in the posting method used on here.

When first I arrived at NMGH, it still had the cell into which a person was locked, and had to break up a specified quantity of stone, which they fed out through a grill, before they were released.

It was a former Workhouse, and the cell was part of the 'Casual Ward' for itinerants as described by Orwell in 'Down and Out in London and in Paris'.
