Ukraine has always been a buffer between east and west, and, in my view, should stay so. They are miffed a bit because Germany refused to sell them weapons on the basis it would not be appropriate to do so, but then sold weapons to Estonia!

Russia is protecting its borders and as someone once said, in Russia's views it protects its borders providing Russians are on both sides of them.
