Wigan ex-pats (UK)

Comments: I lived in Wigan since bein a nipper. That were ooh 70 odd year ago now. I did everything in Wigan. When i broke me leg i walked bout stick on wigan pier etc etc. I'm proud to be a wiganer.

I miss: R.E.S.P.E.C.T everyone had respect for their elders not like the youngens of today. Prater pies, collecting coal with a dolls pram on wigan pier, the "hot totty" on' rugby field,basically wigan itself.

Comments: i used to live at springfield road in wigan, but moved to southampton in 1949. I have been trying to find any pictures that may help my reminisence but sadly cant. if anyone has any pictures, news clippings etc, that they could mail to me i would be extremely grateful.

Comments: Lived in Redwood Avenue Orrell until 1976 when I got married, moved to Garswood until 1987 when I moved to the Wirral. Have two daughters. Went to Lamberhead Green primary school and then Abraham Guest County Secondary school.

I miss: the people, Wigan accent and pies.

Comments: i used to live in cowburn st just off castle hill road down the side of the royal hotel, i moved to garstang about 13 years ago.i am currently employed by lancaster university as a general operative.

I miss: certainly miss the wigan pies and a lot of my old mates from the hindley area. also my drinking friends from the hart common hotel on the outskirts of westhoughton.

Comments: I lived in Golborne for many years and was very fond of Wigan. I played in many bands in the area including 5th Gear, Talk of the Town and Kenny Weathers and the Emotions. 5th Gear used to blow all their wages in the Santibag after the gig. I relocated to Scotland a couple of years ago to re-marry. It was great to see the photos in the galleries, made me feel homesick!

I miss: Santibag. Uncle Joes Mint Balls. King St at 2am on Saturday morning. Hollands pies. The accent.

Comments: I.m originally from Australia, but lived in Ashton in Makerfield/Wigan (Winstanley) for 15 years and went to Cansfield high (82-88), been away 10 years now

Comments: Born and brought up in Poolstock Lane, Worsley Mesnes. Went to WGS which I left to join RAF in 1953 (aged 16). Left RAF in 1977 and worked as a Technical Author (Electronics). Now happily retired, living in Hitchin, Hertfordshire,with my family.

I miss: Wigan Rugby League. Hollands Pies, Decent, crumbly, tart Lancashire cheese, from Mark Williams.

Comments: Born in Springfield. Went to Springview School then worked at Leyland Motors for 25 years Lived at 148 Manchester Rd Higher Ince . Parents chip shop , so plenty of chips and pies. Remarried in 82 and moved from Coppull to Great Eccleston. Left to come to Skye and opened the Glendale Toy Museum in 87 . Sadly burnt down to the ground in 2002 but now back in business and better than ever.see www.toy-museum.co.uk

I miss: Mum and brother still live in Springfield, so miss both. Really miss Lancashire cheese but I still cook 1st class chips.

Comments: left Wigan at the age of 17 (1986), moved on a number of occassions throughout the UK and Germany etc. Been trying to contact John Gallagher from Perth, but unable to. Married Gill from Wigan and have three children.

Comments: Born in Neville St. Platt Bridge, went to St,Nats.was in Boys Brigade left area in 1959 joining army after which went in the Police for 31yrs. married Hilda Lomax, Kingsdown Rd. Abram 1962

Comments: Born: 71 Walthew Lane, Platt Bridge. 30.11.45. Dad: John Kelly, was a miner at the Maypole. Related to Tracy family. His mother lived next door at No 69. Left: 14th Nov 1952 & moved to Bolton, to get dad away from the pit after a bad accident. A coal cutter fell over on him...!

I miss: Open doors and being able to talk or visit anyone. Everyone knew everyone.

Comments: I was born at Pemberton 24.6.1924.I attended Lamberhead Green Council School 1931 to 1938.Also lived Spring Rd and Latham Lane Kitt Green.Served in RAF 1942 to 1947.Moved South 1974 Employed by NCB as Directorof Road Transport.I retired 1984.

I miss: Yes I do miss the meat and potato pies.I miss many of the faces I recall from my youth and school days.Also the society that did not live with the hoolgansm and attrocious manners so common today

Comments: Born in 1937 and lived in Poolstock Lane, Worsley Mesnes. Attended Wigan Grammar school and left to join RAF in 1953. Happily married, and now happily retired after 25 years in RAF and 15 years in Electronics industry.

Comments: Born in Garswood in 1956 spent most of my early years in Billinge, living in a cottage next to the conservative club whilst my mum and dad built a big white house in our garden which was finished in 1975. I went to school at St.Aidans and was in the first class to move to the new school behind London Fields. I went to Ashton in Makerfield Grammar and then went to university in Hull. I worked at Gullick Dobson for about 12 months before moving down Saaf. I live in Brentwood in Essex now working in the civil service.

I miss: I miss walking down the road and bumping into someone I knew from school and catching up on the gossip.

Comments: I used to live in Pemnberton and attended the local schools and colleges. I moved to Sunderland to go to university. I am in my third year of a Business and Marketing degree and will hopefully graduate in summer and who knows where i will end up.

I miss: My friends the road systems you know the one way system past the pier and asda its great. The woods ands fields just off foundry lane. Walking day parades. Really just about everything.

Comments: I"m from higher ince,and lived in battersby st;near the bush hotel. Lived in the north of scotland for a long cold time and i work as a helicopter avionic technician on the north sea fleet

I miss: oh yes yes yes pies.I"m fading away to nothing with all this healthy eating,fresh air and excercise.....please send red cross food parcells with meat and potato pie on top.

Comments: I grew up in Bryn, have two sons Daniel and Sean, worked for Wigan Council, and had part time jobs in quite a few pubs n clubs in the Wigan area. I left in 2001 to live in Edinburgh, but make it back every few months to see friends and family and keep up with the gossip

Comments: I used to live in Millers Lane,Platt Bridge.I moved two years ago, to a village called St.Johns in Woking,to be with my family.I am now working as a postman.In Wigan I worked for Dave Whelan at JJB Sports in the Galleries.I also spent seven years in the Army Cadet Force at Wigan Detachment in the T.A. Centre on Canal Street,I was the Detachment Commander.

I miss: My daughter misses Jasper my sisters pet dog.I miss the John Bull pub and Maximes Rock Night on a Friday evening.We also miss Edwardses meat and potato pies,and Haigh hall.

Comments: Used to live at 72,Martland Mill Lane.Worked at Eckersleys mills as electrician in the late 40s.Moved to wales in 1970 to be works manager at St Davids College.Llandudno.Now retired.

I miss: The wigan dialect and walks down the canal bank.I know it is lovely at Conwy but still come to visit relatives often.

Comments: used to live in Springfield remember the 613 bus. Worked at J.K.S. plg merchants most my work life an went to Whitley high school B4 running Old Station Pub in appley bridge left wigan after marriage broke down, met someone new an started a fresh its great..

Comments: Used to live in Pemberton, parents/brotherfriends still do. Still manage to visit 2/3 times a year. Attended St Matthews Highfield then Deanery High School. Left Wigan in 1975 when starting work. Currently working as a Manager for a High Street Bank.

I miss: Fish and Chips! they are awful down south.A pint of tetleys made with northern water! And of course Wigan Rugby and Football.

Comments: aspull 1999 electrical engineer mines, civil engineering, iron foundry, service provider,in my early 50s.use to drink in the moorgate and running horses.

Comments: Born in Wigan, lived at worsley mesnes and went to worsley mesnes primary school... then moved to Orrell and went to Holgate school for a very short time then went to Abram Guest High School (which I loved). Moved in 1982 to Sleepy suffolk. Kind of slowed down to suffolk pace. Married now Seperated and have 1 daughter.

I miss: I miss the people and the way people make you feel so welcome. I am very proud to be a wiganer and always will be. And yes the pies too.... I can remember a wonderful pie shop in Orrell dont know what is was called but often went there for our lunch. Never ever been able to find anything that tasted as good as those pies. And not to mention the chippies... please can someone come down south and show them how to cook good chips!!

Comments: I MOVED FROM WIGAN IN 2001 TO BOLTON WERE I HAVE BEEN EVER SINCE!! SINCE MOVING FROM WIGAN I WORK FOR ONE OF THE UK BIGGEST PUBLISHING HOUSES AND I ALSO OWN MY OWN BUSINESS

Comments: Born in Marsh Green, moved to Orrell aged 4, went to Lamberhead Green Secondary & then Upholland Grammar School. Went to Manchester University. Now retired - Emeritus Professor of Materials Science. Lived in Bury for 39 years - ever since I got married.

Comments: i was brought up in orchard house in scholes i went to st marys rc school in standishgate then onto st john fisher in beech hill, i lived in scholes until i was 21 then due to personal reasons i had to leave.

I miss: i mainly miss family and the people down home but i must admit there is no place like wigan for pies and steak puddings

Comments: I used to live in Cale Lane, New Springs but moved to the Isle of Man in 1989. I am now retired, but used to work for Wigan Health Authority at Longshoot Health Centre before I moved to the Isle of Man

Comments: I used to live in Scholefield lane, Wigan. I was Muriel walsh and I attended St Catharines School in Scholefield Lane. I also went to Wigan Girls High School. I married at St Catharines Church. I now live in Skelmersdale and am married to Derek. I have three daughters, and four grandchildren. I am now retired.

I miss: I miss the old Wigan before multi story flats. When Scholes had the picture houses. Scholes Pictures and the Labour pictures the flea hole.

Comments: Born Orrell. Lived in Kitt Green, Wigan proper, Standish, Carlton(Blackpool), Chadderton (Near Oldham)and Crewe. Retired at end of August 2003

I miss: Big problem now no Poole's pies. Took neighbour (ex-Derbyshire) to help cart a bed from Bill Lythgoe (Bass Player & Big Wigan Rugby fan) but no pies at Charnley Arms so neighbour now takes p**s. However, good pies at Finnegan's bakery in Crewe

Comments: Have lived in Canada for 25 years. Travelled to the US, Caribbean, Thailand, Hong Kong and all over Europe. Lived in East Anglia for a while and then in the highlands and now settled in Cumbria.

I miss: The pubs, the people and the pies. Walking through Dean Wood and Porters Wood in the Spring.

Comments: Born in lower Ince, [Delegarte st.] 1938. school St.mary's ce. then to Springview S.Mod then finished at Rosebridge s.m. I am now retired and live in Ffynnongroyw N/Wales' I used to work in the pit. Chanters colliery atherton.hgv. driver last 30years

Comments: I used to live at 7 Old Road, Ashton in the 50's and 60's whilst serving as a regular in the RAF. I now live in enforced retirement on the Isle of Wight and have done since 1988 when I was badly injured after being knocked down by a car on a "Pelican" crossing.

I miss: Wigan Rugby and Central Park (Thank god for Sky Sports!) Meat and Potato Pies and some of the most beautiful girls in the whole world (I should know as I've travelled the world extensively) I get sterilised milk here so I no longer miss It in my tea and coffee There are many ex-Wiganers in Ryde and on the Island

Comments: Born and brought up in Caunce Street off Platt Lane, Scholes. Went to St.George's and Wigan Grammar Schools. Played Rugby League for Shamrock Rovers and Rugby Union for De Havilland's where I worked before moving to Shropshire to teach in 1966. Now retired. Former member of Wigan Rambling and Climbing and Wigan Mountaineering Clubs. Still climbing the hills in the Lakes, Wales and Scotland. Inspired to learn Welsh after many years pondering over the strange words on the board outside the Welsh Chapel in Greenough Street. Finished up teaching it at Telford College.

I miss: Pies and vanillas, Central Park, the plantations and the dialect.

Comments: I lived down Leyland Mill Lane near the Malt Works in a big stone house. it used to be named Foundry Cottage, then my parents renamed it Eskwin Cottage. I have 3 daughters and 5 grandchildren.

I miss: I miss meat & potato pies, vanillas,Uncle Joes mint balls, and school friends that I have'nt managed to trace so far.also the places I used to go to when I was a teenager in the 50s early 60s.
