Wigan ex-pats (UK)

Comments: Lived in Standish and attended St Wilfred's 1982-1988, then Standish High School 1988-1993 then Wigan and Leigh college 1993-1995. Left Wigan in 2002, aged 25, to move to London. I now live in Greenwich in a new development of flats on The Thames overlooking Canary Wharf and am working as an Accountant in central London.

I miss: Definately Greenhalgh's cheese and onion pasties. If Greenhalgh's opened a shop in London they'd triple their profits as you can't get a decent pie down here. Also miss King Street on a Saturday night, my mates, Morrisons (though they're opening some down here now!), Embassy No.1 cigarettes (hard to come by down here), being able to nip to Blackpool of a weekend, the warm and friendly Lancashire accent (particularly hearing the words "nowt" and "owt"!), Wigan Market - you can get anything from there - and last but not least my family, who come to London often fortunately. Don't miss the awful drive into Wigan each day down Wigan Road to get to work though and I'm sorry to say I never liked Uncle Jo's Mint Balls - does that make me a bad Wiganer??

Comments: lived for 20 years at claremont rd in billinge, attended billinge c e school from 1950 to 1956 then up holland sec school from 1956 to 1960 mooved from billinge to aspull then from aspull to durham in 1989.

Comments: ok i never actually LIVED in Wigan but I have been trying to trace details of my grandfather who, I believe, lived in Pemberton prior to WW1. He was wounded twice in major battles. Can anyone help?

I miss: I miss feeling sorry for Wigan Athletic when they were lingering in the depths of the football league. Now i get dizzy just looking.

Comments: I lived behind a shop on Manchester Road, Ince from 1948 until 1957. The family then moved to Shevington - what a difference! In 1970, I moved to Nottingham to teach and have lived in the Midlands from that time.

I miss: The potato and meat pies are not equalled anywhere else. Both of my sons, although born in Nottingham, always insist on these pies when they visit Wigan. The town is not the same without Central Park.

Comments: I used to live at 126 Scot Lane Newtown Wigan. I married in 1961 and moved to Wales I have three children two married One at home. Now I am retiered. Used to be a dinner lady.

I miss: I miss my friends I had at school. and the lovely meat and potato pies from Naylors shop in Scot Lane,and Deroma's ice cream!!

Comments: Was born in Golborne, brought up in Ashton in Makerfield and lived in Shevington for tweleve years. I worked at Ravenhead brickworks in Upholland for fourteen years before doing my nurses training, getting married and moving away. Still get down every few weeks for a night out but do not get down to watch Wigan Rugby these days. I still keep in touch with some of my mates

Comments: I was born in Hindley Green where I lived until I married-a Welshman in the Regular Army including the SAS.He has now died and I have become incapacitated-I am 79 years of age. I have lived in many places including Australia but I have never lost my Lancashire accent-and why should I? I cannot say I am happy away from my native area because nowhere I have been are the people as geniune, although I am always b eing told that times have changed. I have one son who has turned out to be a disappointment so I am virtualy alone and this is not an area to where too many northerners migrate-I have been here 40 years-my husband's choice. I have considered going to Spain where the weather is good and the ex-pats are generally is happy, I guess I just miss my husband. What brought this about was that somebody mentioned JJB Sports and I remember the little shop in Market St. Wigan by Frog Lane-I went to Wigan and District Mining and Tewchnical College. I miss: had only one leg.Fish and chips in a newspaper,including the 'bits'. Walking days and Wigan carnival. My father had 'bronchitis' which would now be called pneumoconiosis and pensionable. And the savoury ducks and steak and cowheel pie. Treats to Southport. Unfortunately there is no-one here with whom I can reminisce Cheerio and God take care of you all.

Comments: Born Chapel Green, Hindley 1951. Lived Atherton Rd, Hindley Green from 56 to 66. Married to lovely Yorkshire lass.

I miss: Rugby - it's a pain travelling over the M62 on a Friday, though I still watch Wigan as often as possible, as do my 2 sons, both born in Yorkshire! Also miss the accent/dialect.

Comments: I moved from shevington too north yorkshire almost six years ago now, and although it is much more scenic in the countryside (what with the sheep, cows and horses) theirs nothing like good old wigan lol. I used to attend Kingsway school, then i had to move from Wigan centre to shevington, so i attended Milbrook primary in shevington, then wen't on too Shevington high school.

I miss: i miss definatly pies, you cannot buy nice pies in york.i also miss the people, people seem much more friendly in wigan, not only that but they seem to have an abundance of history about them.

Comments: Even though I haven't moved very far away I still miss it. As a youngster my mum and dad had the Springfield Hotel until 1979 then they had the Ball & Boot for 2 years before coming out of the pub business to move to Shevington. I moved to St Helens in 1992 when IO met my now ex husband and I have been there ever since. I still work in Wigan at Wrightington Hospital and even though I probably wont ever move back to WIGAN because my 2 children are settled where they are, I will ALWAYS ALWAYS be a Wigan lass. All my family still live in Wigan and i'm always popping up there to see them. I have fond memories of all the customers etc that came in to pubs on a regular basis as do my sisters Maxine and Suzanne and my brother Stephen. I think that the old saying says it all, "YOU CAN TAKE THE GIRL OUT OF WIGAN, BUT YOU CANT TAKE WIGAN OUT OF THE GIRL"

I miss: Things I miss from Wigan are the people, the nights out on a Saturday night and a good pie. Pimbletts pies just don't taste the same.

Comments: I used to live at 19 Penshaw Avenue, Hawkley Hall, Wigan, WN3 5NG. I went to Worsley Mesnes Primary, and Hawkley Hall School. And Whitley High between 1984-1987. I am currently running my own Software Consultancy in London

Comments: Lived in Ince(manley st)St Williams primary school, John Rigby Grammar then 6th form college, left in 1976, moved to Manchester then london. Now a psychotherapist in Colchester. Re visited a year ago, things had had changed, "mucky duck" really is now a cess pit!

I miss: Uncle Joe's mint Balls and nut brittle on a saturday night from Johny Tindall's , Central Park, fishing in the canal, jumping the bi? wash, the little jungle (those of you from Ince aged 45+ will know what I'm talking about!) Miss real black pudding!

Comments: Left Wigan in 1953, aged 16, Joined the RAF as an Aircraft Apprentice, directly from Wigan Grammar School. Lived in Poolstock Lane, Worsley Mesnes. I do return occasionaly to see my brother who still lives in Wigan. Would love to hear from any school mates etc who remember me.

I miss: Holland's pies. Decent, localy made Black Pudding and Lancashire cheese. The last time I bought decent Lancashire was in Chester of all places.

Comments: Hello folks, moved away from Wigan January 77. Used to live in Goose Green, my old school was the Deanery. Now i am currently working at RAF St Mawgan ,looking after the Seakings.

I used to go to Scott lane primary school in the 80's and then i went to pemberton community high school then i went to abraham guest high school. I miss them times in wigan. Comments: Born in Hallgate. Lived Church House Bishopgate and Rectory Lodge. Father verger of Wigan Parish Church for 60 yrs+. AttendedWigan Tech. Battery Captain in TA at Drill Hall. Played many parts with Hindley A Operatic, St John's Operatic and Wigan A Operatic, 1952-1963. Played Emille de Beque in South Pacific at the Ritz. Parish Church choir 1939 - 1950. Sister Elsie still lives in St Clements Rd. I moved to Banbury in 1963. Retired in 1994.

I miss: The friendship of Wigan folk. I would love to get in contact with anyone who remembers me from the Operatic or TA days. And I DO miss the pies AND the tripe And Greenall Whitley Bitter.

Comments: Born in and lived Worsley Mesnes. Family moved to Appley Bridge and then Blackpool when I was very young. (Still wartime). Had many relatives in Wigan but usually stayed with grandparents who lived in Swinley and I visited them each Summer during schooldays. Liked the area and knew it well. Now retired, after being in UK hospital technical sales.

I miss: Haven't visited for a few years now. Early happy memories include going to the cinemas. Think I did the full round! I remember seeing 'Casablanca' at the 'Empire' when first released. (And that tells you it was back in the Ice Age!) The Old Arcade should have had a preservation order put on it. Sadly missed as far as I am concerned.

Comments: I moved away many moons ago. I lived in Plank Lane and we moved to Sudbury in Middlesex when I was 5 in 1938. I am trying to find anyone who lived there at the same time - our name was Tattum. I am now retired and my main interest for the last 36 years has been Rottweilers, as a breeder and trainer, etc. I judged Crufts on Sunday 13th March - a great honour.Have also been a singer, and love drawing. Anyone out there know anything about us in Plank Lane. My mother was Martha Ellen Smith, and she died in 1946 aged 48. All the best to everyone.

I miss: Can't remember much, but know my father went fishing and it was the countryside. My father worked as a coal miner, I think at the Bickershaw Colliery, he knew Tom Burke the opera singer, when young, and my mother's sister lived in the cottages opposite the Colliery.

Comments: Born and bred in Appley Waz, grewup messin around Standish n Shevvy too. Only moved away in 2003 to have a less stressful job. Now work as a Medical nurse in what can only be described as a cupboard of a hospital. Still got family and freind in and around wigan n visit when I can.

I miss: The people in general, nobody funnier in all the country than Wiganers. Also miss Twiss pies, me mam's lobbies and me dad's chips wit'eg. Arguaments about rugby (league not the other rubbish), tryin to get a taxi on sunday mornin at 3 o'clock on Kings Street.

Comments: I grew up in Norley Hall, went to Thomas More, trained as a nurse at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary 1974 to 1977. Moved south in 1978 work as a credit controller now for a group of sports magazines based in central London. I am married with two children both at university

I miss: I still get up to Wigan as my family are still there so I am able to buy Uncle Joes, I have introduced many a southener and foreigner to the best mint in the world. I get to see Latics play at quite of few of their away matches and am looking forward to them being promoted this year, as they deserve it.

Comments: No2 Croft Cottages, Brynhall,Bamfurlong,Nr Wigan. Worked at Bryn Hall Colliery in the Fitting Shop from 1934-1939 when I was Called Up into The Militia for 6 months Training in The Lancashire Fusilier.The War broke out on 3rd September 1939 and I went to France with The BEF and Evacuated from Dunkirk on 31st May 1940.after return to England, we changed from Infantry to Tanks and after training went out to N.Africa,Italy,Lebanon,Syria Palestine etc before being demobbed in 1946.Before going abroad I married in Middleton, Manchester. In 1946 I joined an Engineering Company in Middleton Junction as a Fitter. Worked overseas for that Company,then beacame Manager and Director. I retired after 38 years at age 65. In addition to previous information,I am a long Serving Member of The Manchester & District Branch of the 1940 Dunkirk Veterans Association.President of The Branch since February 1979 to the present day plus being Branch Secretary. Visited France yearly for the Annual Pilgrimage. until 2001.Was Parade Marshall and in 2000 Deputy Parades Officer.

I miss: Members of my family still live in Wigan and visit often

Comments: i lived in wigan and still live in wigan, i am a cleaner and went to pemberton girls school. i still live were my mum and dad brought me up, even though my mum and dad are nolonger with me.
