Wigan ex-pats (UK)

Comments: I was brought up in Orrell and lived there until I did my A levels, but moved away to do my degree and to find work. I now work for BAE submarines in Barrow, building nuclear submarines.

I miss: Wigan Rugby League, Wigan Athletic, the people and their sense of humour, but its not to bad being only 2 hours away means I can get back quite often for my Wigan Fix

Comments: i lived in the wakes hotel for years before moving to wales i have two grown up children now and i am single

Comments: i used to live in downall green .i am retired.i like exotic holidays.caravaning.

I miss: i greatly miss PIES, never found any decent pies yet here in wales.i always bring some home when visiting wigan.but i'm still searching....

Comments: I used to live on Swinley Lane. I went to Wood Fold Primary School in Standish and then Gidlow Middle School and Whitley High School. I left Whitley in '83 (so minus 3years for each previous school leaving). I'm an engineer now for a big US cellular phone chipset manufacturer.

I miss: It's a shame all the old Victorian buildings in Wigan have gone or are crumbling. The Market Hall was fantastic. All those arcades. Spent many an hour sliding down the hillsides near the Plantations on a piece of old cardboard.

Comments: I lived in the Pemberton area, went to St Mary's Primary School and St Thomas More Secondary. I moved to Kendal in 1981 and live in a village called Levens just south of Kendal. I have 4 children, 3 of them live in London now. I work in London during the week now and come home at weekends.

I miss: Greenhalgh's have just opened a shop in Kendal so I can't say I miss the pies any more! I miss all the lovely friendly people and hearing the great accent, it's the best in Britain.

Comments: hi, i was brought up in chadwick st in the poolstock area of wigan. i went st judes primary school and then onto st thomas more high school and left there in 1987! i now live in inverness in the highlands of scotland and i work for british red cross as a community support worker.

I miss: deffinatley pies!!! theres nowhere that can make a pie as good as wigan!

Comments: I lived in Leigh Rd Hindley Green and went to Cardinal Newman School. My dad died 41 years ago and I went to live in Yorkshire. From there I went into the army, where I met my ex husband. We moved to Leigh in 1970, and I moved out again to Blackburn in 1982. I then went o live in Brighton in 1983, where I completed and passed my nurses training. I now live in Hindley, and have done so since 2002.

I miss: I did miss people that speek to you. People that accept you no matter what your size, and people that care if you live or die.

Comments: Went to Deanery High. Left prematurely in 1984 due to parents work.

I miss: Sharon Wharton, Mark Talbot, Alison oddie, sitting in Wigan park in the sun with some beers and a radio, the ball and boot !!!, sneakin into the rugby at half time for free!

Comments: Born in Margaret Street, then moved to Park Road. Moved to Cornwall with parents in 1971.

I miss: Pies; good chips, peas & gravy (they don't understand that down here); snow; really cold winters.

Comments: Born in Billinge hospital, was adopted as a baby and now living it up in Manchester! Whoop whoop!

I miss: Rugby.Old Hall Pub.My old mates, and a drink in the angle hotel.

Comments: lived in Ormskirk road, attended St Marks girls 1961-65. Had lots of fun in Wigan in the late 60s Room at the Top, Casino, Vegas, market hotel and then joined the Air Force met my husband David had three daughters and live happily in Somerset. Enjoy computers walks reading music and family.

I miss: Meat and tata pies, and the warmth of the people

Comments: used to live in winstanley. Left wigan as i married a soldier and now home is where the army sends us.....

Comments: Born in Ashton and moved to Wigan when I was aged 4. Lived in Beech Hill went to National Blue Coat, Gidlow and Whitley schools but moved to the Midlands to start my psychiatric nurse training in 1988 and somehow just stayed. Got divorced a few yrs ago and have fleeting thoughts of moving back home

I miss: Beer and the laugh going out of a weekend with mates, I never rememebr a gret deal of aggro but there must have been some. Not forgetting the potato cakes and Greenhalghs meat and potato pies

Comments: i lived in abram ,joined the forces in 1991, i meet my wife 2 b in 2001 shes a weymouth lass . im a long distance truck driver. i get back 2 see my family now and again who still live up there .

Comments: Does anyone remember Tricia Bithell from Norley Hall (White houses) I have two Sons 4 Grandchildren, my husband and I are hoping to retire shortly. I went to Pemberton school, have two brothers. Pat Ward and Annie Tickle were girl friends. I remember a few of the lads Barry Ruddy, Joe Gill, Richard Tickle and Charlie Farley.

I miss: Queing up on a Friday for 3d fish, black peas at the fair, I could go on and on.

Comments: I used to live in Orrell (Westgate Drive). I still come 'back home' to watch Wigan Athletic at various points during the football season (400 mile round trip on a Saturday)

Comments: Originally from Marus Bridge, and born in 1978. Met a welsh girl at the wigan saints match in cardiff a few years ago and we stayed in touch afterwards aso I decided to move down there. Initially lived in Swansea, but now living in Cardiff and thankfully will be coming back to wigan in April 08 as it is a much better place to live.

I miss: I feel the saying 'there no place like home' is never so true unit you move away. There are so many things that you miss and yes pies is high up on the list. Simple things like, knowning your town like the back of you hand, short cuts through that outsiders wouldnt know, places you played as a kid, wigan rugby league, going down your local where your mates are, simply being well known in the place you live. I must admit that every time I come home my first port of call on sat afternoon is the nearest pie shop. They are just not the same elsewhere. Similarly you cant get the same things in the chippy down in wales, can anyone tell me what a bloody rissole is, or faggots. I can at least advise you all not to bother as they aren't a patch on a steak and kidney pudding, again which you cant get in wales. Another annoying fact about being south of cheshire ,i guess? is the fact that people will not watch the rugby league in the pub. The other day they were watching pop idol at a time when wigan were playing leeds in the play offs, I asked them to put the rugby league on and I can tell you the bar man looked at me as though I had two heads. When he eventually put the game on and I had just settled into the game with my pint, a voice chirped up 'can we not watch the union game, scotland is playing' I can tell you I felt like puncing the bloke. On other occasions they would rather watch darts or horse racing than the rugby league and that infuriates me. Most of all i guess i miss my mates and being close to my family. I have grown up through school with the same bunch of mates and it is difficult to have the same kind of friendship with someone who isnt on your wave length or shared the same experiences. All in all I generally miss wigan and this has drawn me to one conclusion, I AM COMING HOME.

Comments: i left wigan only 2yrs ago, through a career move. i work in london and live in wiltshire. i was born and grew up in hindley, getting married in '87 and moving to Standish. I then moved to westhoughton before moving south

I miss: i had / have mates who never miss a latics match - i only get up a couple of times a year and miss the crack loads

Comments: Those who know me from the Wiganworld meets will know me as Snosser. You'll all be pleased to know I am happier than ever and got married in Ibrox stadium, Glasgow on July 14th of this year

Comments: Not really Wigan but used to live in Billinge (close enough). Moved down south after uni and never returned because of work. Still try to follow Latics and rugby. Now live in Twickenham and love seeing the old Wigan league players at the Twick stadium.

I miss: Miss the fact that everyone talks to eachother, as though you've known strangers for all your life. Little old ladies chatting to you at the bus stop. Might have all changed now but that's how I remember home. Miss the Foot(aka Holts Arms) Crank Road Billinge.

Comments: Grew up in Hindley Green and went to Sacred Heart,then Cardi and Leigh Tech.Moved away when I was 18,went to Guernsey then Oz where I met my hubby.Lived in London for 10 years and moved up to scotland 3 years ago,really lovely place to live in the countryside.I've got 2 girls who keep me on my toes.Mum and brothers still live in Leigh so I get back quite a bit,I wish they'd leave the road layouts alone every time I go back something else has changed or become one way!!

I miss: I miss chips,gravy and pudding,if you ask for that up here you get black or white pudding!,The Pier on student night,decent cheese n onion pasties,meat n prater pies and my old mates who I've lost touch with.

I miss: Miss Czech home for my family lost my father for cancer than ,gran, feeeling guilty for using all this amazing time in Scotland and changing it for my family time at home.Just have to go home more often...

Comments: I am in the Army and living in Warminster in Wiltshire. I joined the Army in 1976 in trhe Recruiting Office in Wigan. I was brought up in Shevington.

I miss: I miss the old market hall and the bus station. Trips to Wigan centre on a Saturday. Watching Latics. Playing football on the football pitch in the centre of Shevington. Living in Inward Drive. They were good old days. However, both Shevington and Wigan are not as good any more. There is no way I would go back there now.

Comments: I used to live in Chapel Street and Redwood Avenue in Orrell where my parents still live. I only moved in 2006 after 24 years in Wigan. I've always worked in travel and i'm a team leader at Parkdean Holidays.

I miss: My family! Greenhalgh's meat and potato pies! We only have Greggs up here. Walking down Pem and bumping into people you've known all your life. cheap nights out round Pem or in the town centre. Princes nightclub - i used to work there years ago when it was good. The accent - mine is very confused at the moment!

Comments: I was born in St Helens but grew up in Wigan, so have always considered myseld to be from Wigan. I moved away in my 20's to live in London, where I lived for 18 years. I met my husband in Wigan even though I was lving in London at the time. We moved to Warminster, Wilts nearly 4 years ago.

I miss: My familly still live in Wigan so miss them the most.
