The Wigan Directory of 1869, Pemberton
PEMBERTON is a very extensive township west of and adjoining the Borough of Wigan, from which it is separated by the river Douglas. It comprises the villages of Lamberhead Green, Newtown, Goose Green and Smithy Brook, the first of which is the most important and is three miles from Wigan. It has a Mechanics' Institution, and shows other signs of intellectual activity not common in country villages. There is a plain brick church, of which the living is in the presentation of the Rector of Wigan. It is a perpetual curacy valued at £200 per annum. There are good National and Wesleyan schools here, the Wesleyans having also a good chapel, and also the Primitive Methodists. The L. & Y. railway passes through the township, and there is a station. There are several collieries and stone quarries; at Newtown a cotton mill, manure, and iron works. Though the township is very populous the supply of water is precarious, but one well at Lamberhead Green (Pingate) is noted for its excellent quality. Hawkley hall is an old timbered building now used as a farmhouse. MARSH GREEN and KITT GREEN are hamlets in the township, which have national schools in each, there is one also at Goose Green. Pemberton is in the hundred of West Derby, (with which now is co-extensive the South-Western Division of the County) the rural Deanery of Warrington, and the arch-deaconry of Liverpool. The area is about 4½ square miles, and the population in 1861 was 6,780.
