The Wigan Directory of 1869, Orrell

ORRELL is a township and village three miles west from Wigan. It is in the South-Western division of the county, and the parish and union of Wigan. There is a schoolchurch belonging to the Established Church, and various dissenting chapels. There was formerly a nunnery here, the grounds of which form gardens now much resorted to. Coal is found abundantly in the township. There is a cotton mill and nailmaking. There is a small charity distributed annually to the poor of Orrell, the interest of £100 left by James Thomason in 1730. The chief landowners are the successor of Lord Kingsdown (Roger Leigh, Esq.) and Meyrick Bankes, Esq. There is a station on the L. & Y. Railway from Manchester to Liverpool. The acreage is 1,542 and the population in 1861 was 2,934. FAR MOOR is a small village in the township.
