The Wigan Directory of 1881, Wrightington
Wrightington is a township in the parish of Eccleston, hundred of Leyland, and diocese of Manchester, in the northern division of the county. It is five miles north-west from Wigan, twenty-five from Manchester, & thirteen from Liverpool. There is a church for an Ecclesiastical district here, dedicated to St. James, the value of living is £166 per annum. There are chapels for various denominations of dissenters. Wrightington Hall, in the midst of a fine park, is the seat of Major Dicconson. Attached to the Hall is a Roman Catholic Chapel. Appley Bridge Station, on the Lancashire and Yorkshire line of railway, is in the township; and in close proximity to the station are the extensive stone quarries and brickworks of Messrs. Winnard & Taylor. The Appley Bridge Chemical and Manure Co.'s Works, and a large Corn Mill which has recently been erected and is the property of a Limited Liability Company, every facility is afforded for the transit of goods by the above-named Railway Co., and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The population in 1861, was 1,618; in 1871, 1,525; and in 1881, 1509. Acreage, 3,916.
