The Wigan Directory of 1881, Standish

Standish is a large township and parish in the hundred of Leyland and Northern division of the county. The parish includes the townships of Standish-with-Langtree, Shevington, and Worthington. The village of Standish is three miles N.N.W. from Wigan. There is a church dating from the reign of Elizabeth, erected by Pastor Moodie, the first Protestant rector, who had been a Franciscan friar, and to whom a monument exists in the church. The living which is of the annual value of £2000 is held by the Rev. Canon Brandreth, who resides at the rectory, near the village. Standish Hall, formerly the seat of the lords of the manor - the Standish family - is now in the occupation of Nathaniel Eckersley, Esq., J.P. It is surrounded by a beautiful park and woods. Coal is extensively worked throughout the parish. There is a paper mill, and the Wigan Waterworks are in the parish; also a Grammar School and a National School. The old Roman road from Wigan northwards passes through, and a few Roman relics have been found here. Standish is a station on the London and North Western line of railway. The population of the township in 1861 was 3,054; in 1871, 3,698; and in 1881, 4,263; the area is 2,364 acres.
