The Wigan Directory of 1881, Orrell

Orrell is a township and village three miles west from Wigan. It is in the South-Western division of the county, and the parish and union of Wigan. There is a school-church belonging to the Established Church, and various Dissenting chapels. There was formerly a nunnery here, the grounds of which form gardens now much resorted to. Coal is found abundantly in the township. Screw bolt and nailmaking is carried on here. There is a small charity distributed annually to the poor of Orrell, the interest of £100, left by James Thomason in 1730. The chief landowners are the successor of Lord Kingsdown, and Meyrick Bankes, Esq. There is a station on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway from Manchester to Liverpool.

   The acreage is 1618. The population in 1861 was 2932; in 1871, 3561; and in 1881, 4299.
