The Wigan Directory of 1881, Blackrod
Blackrod is a township and village in the union and county court district of Wigan, rural deanery of Bolton, diocese of Manchester, and hundred of Salford, and is distant from Wigan about five miles by road, and seven by the new railway route via Hindley and Dicconson Mill. It is over seven miles from Bolton, of which it forms part of the parish; it has a church dedicated to St. Catherine, the living of which is in the gift of the vicar of Bolton, and is of the value of £700 per annum.
The nearest railway station is at Horwich Junction, on the Lancashire and Yorkshire line of Railway from Bolton to Preston. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal passes at a little distance to the north. In the township are several productive collieries, each connected with the main line of railway by branches. There is a fair held yearly on the 12th of July.
The line of a Roman road is traceable in the township, and there is every probability that here was a Roman station named Coccium in the Iter of Antonius, on the military road from Mancunium (Manchester) to the north.
The land owners are the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres, Roger Leigh, Esq., and the Marquis de Rothwell.
The population in 1861 was 3214; in 1871, 3796; and in 1881, 4234. The area 238 acres.
Post Office, James Saunders, postmaster. Letters from all parts arrive (from Chorley) at 8 a.m. and 4.20 p.m., and are despatched at 8 p.m. Money Order, Telegraph Office, and Savings' Bank.
