Over 2000 years ago the Celtic tribes settled in what is now Wigan, on the banks of the River Douglas.

The River Douglas rises in the moors above Rivington, from where it flows in a south-westerly direction until it reaches the hill on which Wigan stands.

It skirts the hill to the south and then changes course in a north-westerly direction and eventually reaches the Ribble Estuary.

The name Douglas derived from a Celtic word meaning 'Black Water'. It acquired its name and its colour from the geological coal measures over which it flows in the Wigan area.
