I remember

My first job was at Brown and Haighs in Wallgate. We made mens suits and i worked in the trouser room. We would sing all day to the annoyance of Nellie and Cissie our two bosses. Friday pay day and up to Woolies to but lipstick,hair lacquer,nylons and of course Evening in Paris perfume. Then into the arcade to buy some material for a new shift dress which i would make and wear Saturday night. Not much money left after that but what a great time we had.

my first job 1979 ... ken taylors garage appley bridge wigan . there was a good bunch of lads worked there alan taylor chris rowe ,chris snow, tony ,jimmy . only did 12months boss sold it and bought a bar in spain !!!! good days .........

My first Job. was at the ABC cinema in 1966 I think...... I was a trainee Projectionist. I really enjoyed it but the hours were very unsociable. I worked under John Ellwood, who I felt was a ahrd boss ( then) but later I appreciated him as a great guy who taught me the value of working hard. Other people I worled with were Wilf Brian, and there was an old Irish projectionist whom I liked but his name escapes me , I dont think he will be alive as he was past retirement even then./ happy days especially saturday mornings wien we had the kids matinees I remember the manager writing a song and performing it the song was "And I cry" such happy days.

i went to st james school in poolstock they were memorable days and used to go in annie milligans corner shop for my mam and fridays we would go to taylors chippy for tea i remember clifton mills factory and walking days were we used all gather on the cricket field when we finished

My first full-time was in 1972 at Thompsons Wholsale Warehouse, Poolstock. I enjoyed the challenge of preparing the orders on time; and putting up with Johnny Boardman on the loading Bay, and "Ted" the foreman! I wonder whatever happened to the innocent Billy Bagley, who was a saint for putting up with Ted, and all the torments he received from the lads.

I left school 1956 started work geo thompsons poolstock.This was oldfields old brewery building.Allways admired old mr thompsons jaguar,i remember Bill Hurst Ted Henry Mrs Best Johnny Boardman,also the old veicles Austin k2s Bedford ob Morris commercials Leyland Comet.The starting wage was about £5 a week.Tom Clancy Wigan

I remember my first job, my Mother took me for the interview and I started work at Keith Steele's shirt manufacturers in Hallgate, down the entry beside Bert Smith's sho repairs. For the first six months I was given the task of marking spots on shirts for someone to sew buttons on, I hated this, and I was also the tea girl and errand girl. Becaause the factory was on two floors I had the job of carrying two trays of tea up to the upper floor, the upper machine shop and the cutting room. Because I resented doing this I used to put one tray on top of the other and carry both together. Bill Mann was the foreman and he had told me many times to cease this practice, however I still did it when I thought no-one was watching. Unfortunately one day he caught me as I got to the top of the stairs and shouted to me. I leaned over the bannister and dropped the top tray almost on his head. Needless to say I shortly had to find another job, but the memory of that time lingers on. Does anyone who worked there remember me, my name then was Celia Haynes. I remember May Dewhurst, Joan Banks, Tony Morris, Jack Caldwell, Jean Roby, Jean Taylor' this was 1955

Left school at 15,that was 1951.Started as an office boy with Wigan Corporation Bus.The job was to ink and calculate the takings on the ticket machines the conductors used to use.Also the morning coffee when it took at least half an hour slowly simmering on the stove.The coffee was from Makinsons at the bottom of the arcade.We also had De Beukalar chocolate biscuits,excellent.

My first job was at Coop`s1955 left scool friday started on mon,my mother came with me for the interview to make sure i went,we had some great time`s especially onthe work`s trip to blackpool. i started in the mantle and Nellie Caunce was our trainer, i was terified of her,but she was ok when you got to know her.After that i went on to make trouser`s nad worked there until my children where born,then went back until 1970.

To Suzanne Hendon Hi Suzanne, I'd forgotten about Barbara but yes you are right that was her name. She worked with my dad for most of his time in Wigan. He was teaching until two days before his untimely death, in 1988, at the age of 63. He felt unwell after finishing a dancing class and called an ambulance. What the hospital didn't manage to find in the 36 hours before his death was an Aneurysm which eventually ruptured. At the time I thought 63 was old but now aged 52 it seems very young indeed! We buried him in Hindley Cemetery and old Court School colleagues came from all over the country to pay their last respects. We inscribed the headstone with the title of a song by one of his favourite bands, Roxy Music, titled simply "Dance Away." Members of his classes in Northwich had a commemorative plaque mounted on a wall in the Polish Club where he had taught after leaving Wigan.

Mary, I think I knew your sister Noreen. Did she have a limp? I am sure I knew her. I worked in the sewing room...and once or twice in the office...someone had an accident with the docket pin and I was asked to cover.

my first job was at Whelans supermarket in Wigan in 1974, i worked with another student, Sheila Worthington, our supervisor was a mrs bimson (i think) and i can remember her coming up to us and asking what we were doing, (if anyone remembers Whelans, the cans of peas/beans and jars were just stacked on pallets) and i told her that "sheila is peeing and i'm pickling" - she wasn't amused. my next part time job was at woolworths when i worked on horticulture, or as i called it "manure dept" (again my supervisor was not amused at what i called it when asked where i worked) but it was next to the toy dept, and when asked by someone "where's your sugar cock?" i sent her up to the food dept, but she came back and asked me again, but spelt out that she wanted to know "where's the shuttlecocks"

To Tom Butler and Dave Ingram, I too went to the Court school of Dancing, and was taught by Stan and i think Barbara, i remember first starting around 1965 on Saturday mornings, then staying to have dance lessons towards medals, i continued their then unto Eccles upto 2nd gold bar. went on to dance for Hilda Moss in a local formation team. Loved it.

I had a saturday job at my auntie jessies and cousin maureens shop in orrell near the rose and crown pub I think the shop is now barclays bank oh I thought I was dead grown up making up customers orders and serving I remember we used to get loose butter in a barrel and had to cut and weigh it to whatever the customer wanted I was only about 12 or so oh bring back the good old days

MY FIRST JOB WAS AT HJ,HEINZ STANDISH AT THE AGE OF 15,IT WAS IN THE BOTTLED GOODS DEPT, AND I HAD TO FILL SQUARE JARS WITH SILVER SKIN ONIONS BY HAND ,EACH JAR HAD TO BE PERFECT WITH A SMALL RED CHILLI PLACED DIAGONALY ACROSS THE CENTRE OF THE JAR,IF THE CHILLI MOVED WHEN FILLED UP WITH VINEGAR THE EXAMINER WOULD REJECT IT .AS WE WERE ON BONUS THIS WAS VERY DISHEARTENING , I DID"NT MAKE ANY BONUS THE FIRST WEEK,AT THE WEEKEND I COULD NOT GET RID OF THE SMELL OF PICKELD ONIONS EVEN AFTER SPRAYING MYSELF WITH EVENING IN PARIS ,WE WENT DANCING AT TOM MOSSES AND IS IT ANY WONDER I DIDN"T HAVE A PARTNER

my first job was on a yts sceme at anderton st in ince the pay was 25 pound a week in 1984 my mum put my butties up and i remeber saying to her them cheese and onion butties where good mum. big mistake same butties for a year.

1st proper job was 4 H.J. Heinz .had 2 wait in a line 4 a few hrs on a november morn in 81 .got on in 82 still ther in 2008 .with alot of my old school mates. P.S. it was bloody FREEZING as a few other guyz can tell u.

I started work in 1964 as a junior clerk in the office at Woolworths in Wigan.On my first day one of the girls invited me to her hen night-we are still best friends 43 years later!We were all called by our surnames(I was Miss Jones).I worked there until the store closed in 1984 and then went back to work for John Menzies who took over the building six months later.They were then bought out by WH Smiths and guess what-I still work there in the same office!!I met so many people over the years and would love to hear from any of them.

My first job was at the old Police Station in King Street, Wigan. I was a Shorthand Typist, having done a years training at Byroms Commercial College. It was interesting work typing all the court reports. Those were the days when Policemen were all over a certain height, not like the little ones you see today. I loved it. Big Amy was one of the Policewomen and she was a lovely person. Happy days.

My mum Marie worked at "Shackladys" and "Joan Barrys"(not sure on the spelling) think it was in the late 50s early 60's. My first job was at Coops sewing factory, in mid 80s. My brother Stey used to work at rathbones bakery for years and my sister, Maxine, was the manageress of the old Cassinellis cafe on the corner and the new one when it moved to the Galleries after they knocked the old market down.
