I knew Sam Prior and i think he worked at Golborne, i don't know what he did there or when he started, but he often talked about the people he worked with, i think he left before the strike in 1984.

He was quite a character and always having a bit of fun and he was a keen fisherman as well.

It would be great if anyone remembered him and what he did there, he sadly passed away a few years ago.

I remember working nights for a week in the plodder one winter, shortening at the bottom end of the face. Had to spend half an hour under the showers thawing out in the mornings. That was the only place that I wore a donkey jacket while working on the face. But as you say there was a need for good ventilation in the plodder. Went from there to S12, working in just a pair of football shorts.

In addition to what Whups has said, the bonus scheme came first and caused the rift before the strike and led to a lack of support within the workforce.
Could there be a strong possibility that the bonus scheme was engineered that way?

Replied: 8th Jan 2014 at 18:18

Posted by: tuddy (1336)

Food for thought tonker, but I think the bonus scheme came in about 1977ish, that's before Thatcher came to power. I'm pretty sure there was a ballot about a bonus scheme when I first started in 1974, and it was rejected, but it was still introduced a few years later. You know the old saying, "where there's a scheme there's a schemer".

Replied: 8th Jan 2014 at 21:41

Posted by: whups (14267)

sorry to disagree tuddy ,but the bonus scheme came in when i started in c9 about 1980 & thatcher was in power. it was designed to stockpile coal at the same time to split miners who suddenly went from council houses to detached properties because of the money they were making . except for us at golborne who.s face men made their own deal with the manager & left the rest of us out to dry. it was,nt much fun when you came to draw your money only to see the typists at anderton house who were on the area bonus getting more than us who was working near the face & on the pit bonus,as we were drawing sometimes half of what they got in bonus.and just to add insult to injury we had a ballot on whether to accept the bonus scheme or not , we voted as an area 2-1 not to have it . so much for ballots.

You could be right whups, but I thought the bonus scheme was introduced a bit earlier. I started coal face training at the end of 1978, and I seem to remember being paid 75% of the face bonus while I was training, but I could be wrong, it was a year or two back.

Many a time I have been asked if the pits where still open would I still be working there. I reply I have pit dust in my blood and after nearly 45yrs working I would still be there because I would not have known anything different in my life(only did just short of 20yrs at the pit) I count myself lucky I have only minor battle scars. A Broken finger and a blue scar on my arm, Two bad knees and slightly deaf but I am still alive.]Many an ex-pitman where not so lucky. Ill health has blighted many men some who where not old at the time due to the conditions down the mine( dust/heat/water)to name a fewThe government are slowly admitting these where dire conditions to work in and are very slowly compensating ex-pitmen but in most cases it is too little and to late these men are no longer with us or to ill to enjoy their retirement years

I was working at Bold on the Sunday of the explosion and could'nt believe what at happened but it was all confirmed when I got home to Stubshaw. Did'nt know the lads, people spoke of them when I moved to Kidglove from Bold in Jan 1986.
To get the ball rolling !!! does anyone remember the mad Scotsman Alex Bole ??? he was at Bold, Golborne, Parsonage and Parkside along with me and I believe he unfortunitly passed away some years ago.

Hi whups - I worked with Colin at Golborne in the headings, along with Pete Smith from Atherton and Rod Blackhurst from Wigan. Made goods friends with Colin and had a few good pints with him, was one of the strongest men I have ever known and a gentle giant until he flipped... Only seen him flip a couple of times and was glad I was on the same side as him, even if I was only holding his coat and watching his pint.

Certainly do Joe, when I transfered from Golborne to Parsonage I worked with Big Bob in a Dosco heading, along with Trevor Gurry and another Gurry from Abram, his Dad was a Overman at Golborne but names have gone !!!. Did you know that Bob had a Brother who was bigger than him??? but didnt work in the Pit, I think he worked at Bulldog Tools in Wigan. I've seen him once and if you think Bob was big you should have seen this fellow... When Bob took his money, he took over the Bell Green Pub in Higher Ince and was'nt there long before they won a small furtune on Littlewoods pools. Not seen him since, hope he is still with us.. still recall his size 15 steel boots though.

The service was well thought out and presented nicely and must have been appreciated throughout... Went back to the Catholic Club for some light refreshments and a spot of socialising and I was still coughing up coal dust this morning ....

Reverting back to the "Jack Bit" did you see the full plates that Parky took home??? not mentioning the pies he had in his pocket. It was a sad occassion but it was great to see and speak to the lads, even though I knew their faces I still needed to ask them their names, not to worry as I was was called John, Frank, Bill and few others as the day went on. Great day and a good turn out.

Handsomeminer - I bumped into Colin Farrell ages ago, in Stubshaw Cross Labour club of all places and I was surprised.. as he had is Son with him... I had no idea that he had been married (he was then separated) and had a family !!! Their Sammy, I've not seen him since I left Golborne for Parsonage.
We used to joke to both Colin and Sammy about their blow up doll !!! we said they were to tight to buy their own and would share the same one. I've tried to remember the her name but for the life of me I can't..
It's a pity I can't ask Rosser, as he would have remembered.
Never mind.. RIP Brian and I have some great memories that I could talk about for ages.

Hi Tuddy...How's things with you matey ???

Roy used to go watching Wigan Athletics on a Season ticket in the west stand and just before the game we would see each other and have a chat. Unfortunately, over the last 2 years Roy wasn't able to go as often due to ill health but their Dave would use the ticket and he would nip round before the game for a chat and update on his Dad..

Sad loss for the family..I respected Roy as a person and for being a fair Overman at the Pit. I didn't really know Roy that well personally only at the match and the odd time when we met up but what little bit I did know about him and my contact at the Pit was always well received.

Joe can remember during the holidays they stopped coal production on L12. During this time the face still had to be inspected and I can remember turning my battery round putting it on the side of the panzer and using the cutter chain to haul myself along the face because I am that tall at 6ft 1in I could barely crawl along the face which was around the 3ft mark in height

PeterP yes confined spaces training never mentioned but the coal produced amazing ,we had Florida at Bold but the seam was 4ft.at least ,happy days .looking forward to BBC1 monday second programme on Kellingly tissues ready

The lowest face that I knew at Golborne was H.12. in the Higher Florida seam. We had to use special short shovels as it was too low to use a normal shovel, about a metre high at most. I can't remember if the cutter was a trepanner or a shearer, I didn't work on there regularly, but I think the powered supports were made by Dowty and not Gullicks. Chris Southworth will know.

You've got a good memory Colin. So if the cut was 42 inch on H12, it was probably at least 6 inches lower under the supports, so about 36 inches working height. I remember that it wasn't high enough for some fellers to kneel up and answer the call of nature.

Hi Joe ,iam sure the lower Florida faces L19 , L12 and L20 had all finished when you came over from Bold ,I worked on all the higher Florida faces don't remember you down there but obviously could be wrong I don't remember Roy southward there either ,could have been the Ince 6ft you where on that was quit low and I think Roy worked on them, I never liked working in the Plodder where you was for obvious reasons plus it was very cold, me and shep where sent into the Plodder a couple of days after the explosion to check things over not a nice experience 2 grown men literally holding hands

If you thought a seam 42 inch high was low,Brackley Colliery had one just 22 inch high,I went there on a visit around 1955,the colliers used flat spades, another strange thing was, there was a branch of the Bridgewater Canal running through the workings.

When I 1st started for the NCB in 1969 we went on a visit to Hapton Valley Colliery and went on the coal face there and I think the face was about 28 inches high and they used a plough to cut the coal. One run of the plough cut approx 3 inches of coal. You never got told off for lying down on the job

Hi,
Found this site when I was searching Google for something else. Brought back a lot of memories. Was very sad to hear the way Terry Cave died. Spent some time with him in the Ince 6 feet on afternoon shifts, and caught up with him in South Africa when I was working for Gullicks.

Whups I was an apprentice and then an electrician, worked on C9 for a spell, left just before the strike to go and work at Gullicks. When I was an apprentice used to travel on the coach and sit near the back where Jack Taylor used to sit. Seem to remember you and big Dickie (I think that was his name) and some others used to get on at the Blue Bell in Downall Green ?
It's been a while, so I might not have it 100% right.

I'm Tim Ledwith, my Dad, Tom Ledwith was an Overman in the 6 feet. I was in the same apprenticeship year as Brian Rawsthorne, who survived the blast. Seem to remember the C9 top road manrider Jackie Jones was the driver, and he had a young bloke who worked at the pit as well, the guard on the manrider was Felix ? Like I said in the last post, it's been a while and reading these posts is bringing some of the memories back - even if they're slightly wrong.

felix cabos was his name & worked with me & sammy hughes & derek churton in c9 top road on that manrider , before felix it was tommy kebbell who drove the manrider . don shawcross was the engine driver in the engine house & i remember your dad tommy . was talking to brian at the book signing about the disaster at golborne library . tim i worked on c9 from start to finish even putting the stopper on it when it finished & i slightly remember you too . have you looked at our pic gallery in the work section i,m on there with dickie eck & others you may remember once you,ve looked at those pics & we are on the last page of those pics .where r u now ? .

Hi Brian, not sure where I remember Jackie Jones from, he might have been the afternoon shift driver on C9, or I've got my manriders mixed up and he was driving the S7 or the Plodder return manrider. Jemmy Wood (?) used to drive the S1 rider I think.
Looked at the photos, remember you and big dickie and the L3 photo with Jack Turner in it. Didn't Bill Scholes used to be the deputy for L3 shunt ? I remember him catching me riding under the safety gate on the L3 belt, and I had to go and see Gerald Eaves (not a good day).
Like I said before, I left just before the strike and went working for Gullicks, then emigrated to Australia in 1993 with Gullicks, now working for a company that makes electrical equipment for underground coal mines. Haven't been back to the UK since 2014, but I made sure to visit the memorial where the pit gates used to be.

Hi Brian, read about Harold dying on this messageboard, but don't remember seeing anything about sweetpea. I'll have to go back to the beginning and read through it all again. I suspect its getting easier to say who's still with us rather than all those good people who are sadly no longer with us.
When I was working for Gullicks I worked at a lot of different pits in the UK and overseas, and I never found one that had the same 'feel' as what Golborne had.
Saw the picture of the electricians John Marsh, Jackie Greenhalgh, Allan Parr and Dickie Humphries outside the new workshop in the photo section. We moved into the new workshop just before I left, previously the electrician's shop was upstairs in the old building, I remember having to use the hoist to lift cables in to the workshop so we could put the ends on them.
I'm living in Mackay, which is on the east coast of Australia, about two thirds of the way up if you're looking for it on a map.

Hi Anne,
I think I may remember you, not going to mention surnames , but did you have a daughter called Janine ? I remember another Anne - she was married to Harry (I think) and had a tribe of red haired kids and a little terrier dog that yapped all day when I was trying to sleep on night shift, I think she lived at number 16 or 18. Sorry but its been a while. Tim.

Not happy about the comments about Brian Rawsthorne on the other messageboard, but I'm not about to say anything to prolong the argument.
The bloke made an honest mistake, and thats it, but until we've walked a mile in his shoes, we are in no position to judge. It's easy to make a mistake when filling in forms - didn't some of the guys who transferred to Golborne when Hapton Valley shut get into trouble because they misunderstood what entitlements they could claim ?
Hope you are well in the current situation. Tim.

Hi Brian,
They've lifted some of the restrictions over here, but numbers are still limited in public places.
I remember the original 'Burnley Men' you talked about, they were Geoff Blackburn's personal hit squad and were bloody good workers. The other guys I were talking aqbout were the people wheo transferred later on when Hapton Valley closed, there were a couple of electricians amongst them.
Best advice with firefox is leave him be and not reply to him, and he'll get bored and move on (like that Tommy Two Stroke). He's just another keyboard jockey who grows a pair of balls when they get behind a keyboard and say things they wouldn't have the guts to say to your face.
I was in the same apprenticeship year as Brian Rawsthorne, so it could have easily been one of the other apprentices or me who was down there on that Sunday.

Hi Brian,
I know it's hard not to do mate, but if you keep replying to these sort of people, they'll just keep the argument going and probably attract other trolls to the site. They're very careful with the words they use, so the posts are certainly inflammatory, but not quite bad enough for the admins to step in and do something about it.

Some parts of Australia are looking at having to go back into lockdown because the corona virus has flared up again.

Hi Brian, things here are as "normal" as they can be under the circumstances, we've had restrictions lifted, put back and lifted again as the Coronavirus has gone up and down and back up again. At the moment everybody is going to work or school and most shops, pubs and clubs are open but with restricted numbers and social distancing. Some states still have border restrictions so internal travel is limited. International travel is very limited, most places if they let you in the country, you have to do a 2 week quarantine in a hotel at your own expense when you get there. Beginning to wonder if this is the 'new normal'. Coal mines over here are still busy, so we are getting plenty of overhaul work, there's even talk of new mines opening up. Reading in the news about a new underground coal mine opening in Cumbria - is this still going ahead ?

Not exactly true. Some people, especially those who lost their jobs or had their income cut by the Covid, qualified for special hardship payments, also they introduced what they called Jobkeeper payments for were people were working reduced hours the Government paid the employer to make their money up. There have been reported problems of some employers pocketing the money and not passing it on. Also some people living in remote areas qualified for a payment to stock up on supplies because of the disruption to transport.

One state in Australia (Victoria) went into a total lockdown, because the Covid-19 was spreading uncontrollably, so it's possible that the state government gave out a special allowance to affected people. but it certainly wasn't an across the board thing.

Sorry to hear about your Dad Tim. Knew him from his time In L.20 when I was on the haulage, then he was the face deputy in the six feet when I did my face training. The last time I saw him he was driving one of the barges at Wigan Pier, he let one of my lads steer the barge while we had a chat, must be 20 years ago. I remember somebody telling me that he held some kind of fitness record on the mines rescue team. R.I.P. Tommy.

Felix's funeral is on Tuesday the 15th, 10am at Saint Thomas's church. Apparently Felix had recently been awarded the Legion Of Honor By the French government. He didn't get to collect it. No doubt the award was in recognition of his war time service as a commando in the Free French Army.

I have read with great interest some ofthe conversations held in text and relived alot of the memories
It’s sad to see the passing of so many of my / our former colleagues rest in peace with greatest respects to their loved ones. Looking forward to being allowed to paricipate in conversation.

A friend of mine (for a short time) was an apprentice electrician at Golborne Colliery back in 1976.
One day, he went home early from North Road College, as he didn't feel too well. He was making his way home to Lowton, on his Honda 125, along the East Lancs Road, when he hit a stationary HGV truck which was parked on the road, broken down, right near Old Boston and was killed instantly.
His name was Michael Ashall. Does any of you remember him, or the incident?
