I am searching for my late husbands ancestors who came from your area of Billinge/Upholland: Swift/Townshend/Cliff,it seems that most were farmers, I would like to find out when they moved to Essex, I have just found so many names in your 1869/81 Directory, now to try & find out if they are part of the family tree I'm doing, many thanks for such a great site

I was born in Wigan and I am currently researching my family history. My grandfather, Joseph Henry (Harry) Evans was a grocer in Gidlow Lane up to the end of WWII. His father (I think Joseph Evans) was a grocer in Lower Ince. He was also a keen cyclist and amateur author. I am also interested in tracing the Murray family (my grandmother was Eva Lilian Murray) and Fisher family (presumed maiden name of my great grandmother who married Joseph Murray).

I have known Cat almost a year now, and we are very close thanks to the internet. We chat and e-mail each other as much as possible. She is a good person and I'm glad we have developed such a nice friendship. My dream would be to travel to Wigan some day and meet her. She could show me around this fine United Kindgdom town. Cat also likes to hear about the United States, so maybe she can visit here too. I must say, "Excellent work", to all you fine people involved with this site. A fond American admirer, Ted =)

Searching for pictures of old dolly tubs, wringers and poshers (the wooden instrument used to agitate the washing). Thought they might have been on your site, have visited wiganworld whilst in England. Fantastic place to visit spent a whole day there.

I've been researching an ancient ancestor who came from "Dover" (not the Kent one though) and who married in Wigan to a woman from Garston, Lancs. (not Garstang). I think Garston is/was SE of Liverpool on the river or canal. I think this website is one of the best I've worked with. Thanks a lot!

I found this site fascinating. I especially enjoyed the "old gallery". My grandfather was born in Wigan at 485 Warrington Rd on 2/14/1908. He and his father were both named Albert Goulding. My great-grandfather and his family all worked in the coal mines in Wigan before they came to America in May 1911 aboard the Carmania.
I love looking at the old pictures of the coalminers ... gives me an idea of how my ancestors lived.
