I notice the first bricks were dislodged of Wigans last great land mark. The Ritz has only a matter of days before all traces are gone. I was there with camera and camcorder to record thie great loss.
Have gathered quite a lot of footage and photos, inside and out, when finally edited together will send you a dvd copy.
Great site, if only more were as interested in Wigan's great past.

My great Granndfather Peter Burgess lived in wigan from about 1889 until his death in 1951 at the age of 95. He had been born in Northwich but moved to Wigan via Gorton in Manchester where he married. He was a loco driver with - I think - the Great Central (he started work in 1873/4 and retired in 1921). Does anyone know of the railway links between Wigan and Gorton? Any photos of the Spring Street area?
Best wishes

I have an old photo of Wigan PC AFC "Laithwaite Shield Runners Up 1926-27". My Dad's cousin - James Lawrenson - played for them.
I really like the site - it's excellent.

Would love to make contact with any of the girls I went to Wigan Girls High School with.1950-1954. Miss Holland was the principal. Miss Bennett was the French teacher. I often wonder how their lives have been. If any read this please go to www.rallyforrecovery.com.au and you will find out what I am currently involved in. Remember Anne Atherton, Margaret Stott, Barbara Lally and others from school.

Loved the site. My ancestors came from Ireland to Ince around 1880 - Patrick Burke. In his later years he was the lamplighter (around 1914). Had a brother William. Married Julia Carr at St Williams RC church (does this still exist?) My grandfather, John Burke, married Mary Ann Wootten and my great aunt Margaret married John Westhead (father Peter)from Hindley. Any relatives out there???

I'm trying to find info on my great grandmother Sarah Jane Makinson's late husband, Isaac Orrell. He died on 28 Aug, 1893, from a type of TB at their home 249 Warrington Road, Ince. He was just 26 years old. They married at St George's Church, Scholes, on 6 Aug, 1888. At the time, they were both living in 34 Upper Morris Street, Scholes.
Isaac's mother was called Mary Orrell (b. 1830 in Ince). In 1881, the family was living at 208 Warrington Road, Ince. From the census return, we know he has six siblings. They were: William Orrell (b.1850); Catherine Orrell (b. 1857); Martha Orrell (b.1859); Joseph Orrell (b.1861); Henry Orrell (b.1863) and Mary Orrell (b. 1869).
Please get intouch if you have any info or check out my webpage:
