I grew up in Newton-le-Willows. When I married we eventually lived in Ashton-in-Makerfield from 1963 until 1971, then we moved to Appley Bridge until 1978 when we came to Australia. I really miss the markets, the view from my back garden in Whitehall Avenue and the history of all the areas. Kangaroo Valley is a wonderful place, so beautiful, but on a 40C still day nothing can compare with an autumn morning in Appley Bridge. As a mature student I studied at Wigan Tech - is it still there?
Love the web site, keep up the good work.

Looking at wiganworld, so much of Wigan seems to have disappeared. Can anyone tell me if the Hippodrome is still there, probably not, went there as a child saw Betty Driver ( Betty Turpin in Corrie ) in a pink tulle dress, blonde hair, playing a white piano, she had a poodle on stage with her, also on the bill was Ronald Chesney who threw small harmonica's out into the audience. Also is the building of the Wigan Mining & Technical College still standing ? My Grandfather Thomas Bryson was a lecturer in mining there.
I love looking at wiganworld !

This is a most wonderful site! All my father's family come from Wigan and surrounding areas, and I had the great pleasure and privilege to live in Maghull for about a year in 1969. The very minute I win Lotto, I'm heading straight back to Liverpool!

I was interested in more info on Wigan in general, and Wigan FC specifically, after I saw the stories about the Lactics being promoted. It made me curious about the place and, from what I can tell, it seems like a fine community. I'm curious to come see it on my next trip across the pond. Perhaps I can take in a fixture, too.

I linked over to Wigan Times, too. I was especially taken with Keith Guest's Around't Kitchen Table column. What a hoot. I'd love to buy that man a pint or two. Be worth it for the stories.

Best regards!
