Brian/Genealogy

Brian
Someone as mentioned on the guestbook page having a genealogy messageboard.
I think that would be a super idea.
Its an area of interest to me and others.
It will also keep Sandra busy. She helps people out on the 'people' messageboard.
She's a star!

Its a good idea. Genealogy is the world's biggest hobby now! There is a genealogy section on wiganworld, plus a 'people' messageboard, plus the Wigan Family & Local History website to go at.

Will look at combining/adding more in the future.

I have big (that should read BIG) plans for wiganworld in the future.

These include a dedicated server for faster access, videos and sound files, more interactive stuff... For example, people send me photos and sometimes it can take me a while to add them - wouldn't it be great if anyone could upload their old and new Wigan photos to the site?

Blogs, better personal profiles, rss feeds etc etc etc - I would need a little more help with moderating stuff, and would need you all to spread the word but its certainly going to happen...

aitch, join the Wigan Family & Local History Society, they have a meeting once a month at the Springy. There are loads of people there that will advise and help you..

Wigan Family & Local History Society

You can turn up at the next meeting to join (costs about £6), have a pint or three and ask away!

Aitch, My brother and me have traced our Ancestors back to 1597 so far and still going. The History Shop in Wigan is a really good place to start and there are people there to help you. Also if you go on Family Search.Org web site with any dates of births, deaths or marraiges before 1900 it will really get you on your way. Keep posted and let us know how you get on. Good Luck

May give it a try, but we have a very complicated family, my mother and father both had the same surname, although not related I think, my mothers dad it seems, was adopted soon after being born and took the name of the family adopting him but it wasn't official, if you see what I mean and to complicate matters further, we have very little documentation about any of this, we do know that my fathers dad is buried in a grave which was registered to a family called Nutter, why this should be we do not know, still may go and have a chat at the history shop, cant do any harm.

good place to start aitch is the mormon church at chorley.
or you could pay £63 quid to the geneology site and do it all from your computer armchair (way to go bud)the trick is, go down your fathers line...you will get all his family and the other families that will follow the male line. dont be tempted to jump to mothers sisters aunts ect ect ect, you will get lost in the maize. go down dads line, you will get pretty much as far as you will be interested in.
be prepared for some surprises aitch, the proverbial woodpile springs to mind.

If your family like mine are Wiganers, the history shop has loads of information.
I am new to the game and I have got lots of info from Lancs BMD and familysearch.org.
I've also found that if you have any older relations living, they can also give you some family stories which are sometimes a good starting point in your research.
My local library also has access to census reports and I can get copies for only 10p.
I hope thisd helps anyone whose starting off researching their family.

aitch,
The graves office near St John's Churtch
in Standishgate has all the info regarding graves and who is buried in them.
I've only been once but they were very helpful. They might give you some leads if you decide to take it up.

The problem with older relatives is that I am the oldest, all the people who could have helped have long gone, the last one was my uncle, who promised he would write every thing down, but he died last year aged 80, he never got round to starting his memories.

Hi all, I've done nothing on the genealogy side of things, sorry. Not enough time yet.

salgadsby - There's no secret, lol. No ideas why your PM's aren't working. I take it you're talking about the fourms... The forum is the only section on wiganworld that hasn't been coded by me!

Thanks for the offer of moderating. I may take you up on the offer if I need more help.

Your business sounds like its having a good time, good luck with it.

Show your support folks!

Hi Brian - yeah the forum one - but someone pointed out that the messages only move to the sent box once they are read - not when they are sent - for some reason - so just did a test and thats how it works!!

Thanks - Yes business is booming - can't wait for next week - get new set of holidays from my main work so booked the week off to push the business along a bit and keep up - think it must be cos of the fast approacj=hing bank holiday - one of the biggest DIY weekends of the year!!!

Let me know - re help if I can do anything to help ya.
Thanks
