Great site... looking for information on business Ellor & Co, Hattery and Outfitters, apparently in existence from 1890 - 1906 at 54 Market Place an 2 Makinsons Arcade in Wigan. Since my grandfather was Percy Ellor and his mother was a milliner and his grandmother worked in the place until she died, I think I am somehow connected. Anybody know anything of this?

In 1991 I took a photograph of a Wigan building where my grand father lived in the 1890's,unfortunately I did not note the name of the street. The photo shows a ground floor shop
called Strands with a Post Office next to it.The top part of the building is where my grand father lived. The ground floor in the 1890's was a Blacksmiths.I wish to identify the street.
I would appreciate any assistance on this.
Many thanks

Really interested in the stories about Greenfield children s home. My dad Anthony Ryan was there around 1950s. He doesn't remember anything or anyone. Probably because he was only 2 when put there or that hes blocked everything out. Does anyone remember him?

It seem's people have varying degrees of tolerance for the way Wigan dialect is spoken. The main problem I see is the interpretation of the spoken word into the written one. There are no rules as to how a word is spoken and spelt in dialects. I have read varying articles pretending to be Wigan speak and it was slow progress getting through them. On here I have seen etoreet and ar't awreet take your pick. Just enjoy the fun of it all, don't get uppity. The lingo is changing over the years, nothing is set in cement and remember in a few years it will be texting phrases LOL !!!

My gr-gr grandfather Barnabas Meadows, was convicted for his particapation in the 1831 riots. I have been visiting every site to gather data on him trying to find his birth records and what part of Wigan he was living at the time.

I really don't mean to moan but you need to get your facts right. The 'Wigan Dialect' page seems to be a complete mockery to wiganers everywhere. half the words are just ridiculous for example 'Yonder' believe it or not, We aren't shakespearian! Others are incorrect because I have definitely heard people say 'Reet' as right but it is usually used as another way to say hello. Artawreet is complete gibberish.
I really hope you take what I say into consideration,

Annon.
