My great grandfather worked at Windy Harbour Colliery, 1852, located in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Found this site and thought, at first, it was in the US. Realized eventually it was in the UK. Evidently the US mine was developed by an immigrant from Wales and named the mine after his native area. My compliments on your site.I found it of interest that there was a "patch" / hamlet / townland in th mining area named Wigan and it was famous for involvement in the infamous Molly Maguire legends in the US.

After reading some of your comments about accents, i had a look at your dialect list and although there are some words we don`t use in Derbyshire, there are common words and pronounciations we use. With all respect, I believe that what `Anon` wrote previously, regarding lazy, or inpropper ways of wording, became void `ears and `ears ago. Some people do write things how they sound to them, it`s life. Enjoy the wording, dialect will always be there.

This site is brilliant! i find it fascinating. i am searching for a Miss Claire Moorfield (NEE) of, or formally of, Alma Grove, Marus Bridge. She will currently be around 30 years old. We lost contact in 1999/2000 when Claire was studying nursing at Birmingham. If anybody knows Claire, or Claire`s family, i would very much like to regain contact with her. 11 years is too long! thank you, Alec Nicholls.

Hi. I'm wondering if anybody knows of a Carol Smith who lived in Wigan. She's my old friend, we met early 2000's in Fethiye, Turkey. I lost her adress and phone number so I unable to reach her. I found her photo: http://repairs.walh.co.uk/press/hamper.htm, it says she was scheme manager at Kildare Grange, Hindley.
If you know her, please e-mail me at ssincan@hotmail.com
Thank you.

Can anybody tell me if Brian McIntyre still lives in Wigan - he used to be on Wigan Lane, almost opposite Woodfield School, a bit further up the hill. We were at Wigan Grammar School until 1959.

Does anyone know of a Borsdane Square in Aspull? My grandad, John Norris was born there in 1892. Would like to know who else was living there but can't find it on 1891 census.
