Hello. This is just a short note to give you some more for your dialect section.

"favvers" = looks like
"kecks" = knickers
"sh*te hawk" = (I'll let someone else explain that!)
"puss" = purse
"cornish" = mantelpiece

A few phrases:
"ast geet a leet?" = "have you got a light?"
"tha's left thi puss ont' cornish" = "You've left your purse on the mantelpiece"
"I were called gooin up Pem" = "I was supposed to be going to Pemberton"

And my favourite:
"Weer wust fotched up? Tha speyks weel!" = "Where did you spend your childhood years? I can't understand your accent"

I'd like to thank the people who create this site. It must have taken a lot of time and effort. I could spend hours just looking.

This site is fantastic for research. Family traced back to 1839 in Lancashire area. Visited in 2003, tried to get photos of relatives graves in Haigh Parish Church grounds but gate was locked and we were unsuccessful. Can anyone help with this please. William Hilton died 3 Aug 1909 and his wife Margaret died 28 Feb 1874. We were only in the area for one day and was disappointed we could not get into the church grounds.

I was just chatting to someone at work who was remembering going to a bar in Wigan in the 1980s. I used to live in Manchester and then Warrington and used to go to the same bar, but for the life of me can't remember what is was called and it's driving me mad!!

It wasn't in Wigan town centre, it was a fun bar and had guys n gals dancing on the bar, I even remember they used to have a guy doing something with a snake.... and the song 'Broken Glass' (or something to do with Broken Glass....) was always sung by one of the acts... can anybody HELP pleeeeease.
