To Eileen Ryan. Wigan is still as you left it. The council has taken over control of surrounding towns and call everything Wigan. It's 'Wigan this' and 'Wigan that', anybody or anything within a 10 mile radius is classed as a Wigan whatever. I've lived in Golborne all my life and class Warrington as my town, rarely going to Wigan. Indeed, my address is Warrington. But Hardybutts is still there, in Wigan !

I was born in Wigan, Hardybutts, Went to St Patricks School. in the early 60s. Reading the messages, am I the only one to have been born and lived in Wigan? or has Wigan grown to take in surrounding areas?

Steve Coleman, I'm a bit late with this. I haven't visited the site for a while.
Hunter's Hill quarry was on the heights over looking Parbold from the East or Southeast. No more than a mile or two from Parbold. The quarry was on the left side as you approached Parbold from the Southeast (Wigan side). I believe there was a little old pub near there called The Farmer's Arms.
I used to swim there in the fifties.

researching family history. Does anyone (or their relatives) have any information, images, stories etc on Driving Lane? This street, demolished around 1950, used to be just off Chapel Lane, near the junction of Cross st. and Bridge st. (behind Carpet World). Anything would be welcomed. Many thanks.

i often visit the site. it is like looking back into the past. i often look at the picture of leyland park of the old band stand. near it is some sort of pond. it use to be a paddling pool with roses growing around it.i had many happy childhood memories playing on park, getting chased by roy the park keeper, climbing on green shed, hedge diving, playing on monkey bars. the park use to flood every winter at bottom near eckersley ave. we use to slide on it when it froze over. i miss it

Debbie GAYNOR (Walls) left a message on guestbook re name of Walls in Victoria Rd. Platt Bridge. I do not know how to reply to that, (still a learner) I am from Neville St. Platt Bridge, used to have a sly pint in Ches. Walls as it was called locally Commercial Inn, and went to school with Dorothy Walls, and knew her brother Jimmy Walls, Dorothy married Derek Greenwood from Neville St, is this the same family?? If it is Dorothy now living in Eastbourne, Sussex. hope it helps, cheers Wallace Price
