eric the only electrical engineer that i remember at golborne colliery was tommy liptrott the elder brother of les but there was a benison who was in charge of all the lamproom activities in the northwest area of the ncb he used to work at the victoria colliery at standish many years ago & got promoted to lamproom engineer for the area

eric the name you are looking for is harold benison (rocket to us lot)he used to wipe his backside with a clump of grass don·t ask me how i know that but you know what us kids used to get up to there was no privacy around the bryn kids

Ferdy, I have a Ordnance survey map printed off at Wigan history shop, it is on that, it dosn't show the railway going through bryn, i think it is 1842

hi fred.i remember dave bradburn[sadly no longer with us ]also edwards lived on whitledge green,next to don green and family,i remeber his helper but can't remember his name[ was it jack rac? nick name puff and blow]

bentlegs were does fore footed cross originate from never heard that before(it was just before my time)eric you are right re bradbuns cobblers ther was another bradburns shop at the end of the rpw across the way from the grammer school it was david bradburns mothers shop they sold us kids pop & toffie (next to the little park) they also had a coal round delivered by jimmy edwards on horse & cart with second man rocket (always had a snotty nose)remember him ? he always wore a ex army overcoat & flat cap used to chase us kids

Nutty Tart,I used to play in the back yard of the Star pub when I was a lad..What was the name of the cloggers shop opposite Nathan(Tanny)Wrights shop.The manager of Wrights shop was a James Monks.I also used to deliver milk for Mr Fairhurst who lived at 166 Wigan Rd Bryn.He owned nearly all the land behind that side of Wigan Rd.(all now built on).Happy days..

Was Wally Bishops the Brittania?
I do remember the Star very well, my auntie had her wedding reception upstairs there in the early 60s. My lot came from Nicol road.
I don't recall any of the landlords names that you mention though...sorry.

thanks eric, wallies was all boarded up when i left in 2002 nutty tart you will not remember then the star pup or as it was known in my youth as old joe pearsons the oddfellows was known as fishwicks all named after the pup landlords who would be the landlord for anything from 10yrs to 20yrs &sometimes longer i supose ,the bathsprings was known as phil pye·s pup, landlords all now gone to the great pup in the sky !!!

hi, wally bishops pub is no longer there.i can remember wallies two daughters ann +margaret.the rabbit run is still there but i don't think it is passable very overgrown

Hiya ferdy, You've lost me now, sorry never heard of Wally Bishop, must be before my time but I remember hearing about the Bryn Crusaders from my dad.
Rabbit run is still there but quite over grown now, I don't think many know that it's there, a lot of em are strags in the area now.

nutty tart you could well be right but i always thought that the bryn crusaders used wally bishops stable loft as their changing room & then went on to the bryn rec via the rabbit run do you remember the path which ran along side of the railway line,is it still there?
