whups, Deleted this off People, saving it in case I ever re-upload
As for Wood pit that Sunday when the fire started my brother was working on the surface when he got a phone call from underground telling him about the fire and call out the rescue team straight away and act as go between, they told him not to bring anyone up till we arrive, don't know what went on underground other than they brought the men up and flooded the pit there and then never to open up again after that Sunday in 1970 (they may both have been on the mine recue team)

Hi everyone time to come out of hibernation and look forward to spring, Now Sunday morning with nothing to do, someone ask me is there other ways to get into the Dell without going through the churchyard and as every old ex-Downer Greener would say YES but there's not, ?? is there as I couldn't find one .
So why up there looking I had never been for a look round the Dell for over 20+ years and I'm ashamed to upload the 3 videos that I made showing the state it's in, before anyone pulls them to peace's it was just a walk through with no intention to make something nice to upload but would like you to see it as if you was doing the walk ---Will Delete them--Go full screen

Thanks for videos dougie, brought back good memories spent a lot of my youth in there, I see it's well overgrown now, we gained access at side of Millingford and walked round to left or used the entrance at parish hall on rectory rd, you can tell today's youth don't visit, there used to be well walked paths in 60s & 70s.

I know its not DG but I drove down Bolton RD towards Bamfurlong and the grass verge has been cut back along a section of the road and now it just looks like a sea of plastic. The Dell will be the same cut the undergrowth back and there will be tons of rubbish

Replied: 2nd Feb 2021 at 07:17

Posted by: dougie (4632)

Bambam--the young of today don't respect things like we did and I see teenagers walking throw the churchyard to get into the Dell, not saying they are vandalising either the churchyard or the Dell but if they allow access to the Dell there should be an entry other than the graveyard, as for people with dogs walking throw some not all let their dogs run free in the graveyard and they only take their dogs for exercise and one thing.

Replied: 2nd Feb 2021 at 08:04

Posted by: dougie (4632)

PeterP--Your right but now is the time to do a litter pick before it starts to grow your suggestion is only papering over the cracks, the volunteers in the churchyard are doing and have done a first class job over the last year, I wouldn't expect them to even look or think at doing anything in the Dell, saying that they must have some good organisers/motivators in their group it's only extra helpers they need, willing to come along to give their time for a weekend litter picking Sat/Sunday, I'm sure they would arrange the knew voluntary pick-up weekend outside their team

Replied: 2nd Feb 2021 at 08:27

Posted by: bambam (2247)

dougie do you know who actually owns that land we call the dell, there is some nice timber there with fallen trees, anyone with a chain saw and wood burner could have a field day in there, the right people will make good use of that timber.

Replied: 2nd Feb 2021 at 20:28

Great days and nights in there I the was several places you could get in dell cut though side of bell was 1 but it's all changed now all the skoo needs to be fenced off now days it's sad really but there you go kids don't play out now glad I was born when I was all kids played gether back then stay save everyone

Replied: 2nd Feb 2021 at 20:48

Posted by: dougie (4632)

No idea bambam as far as I know it's all church land and where the school field is now was for a new graveyard as the other was getting full but that was years ago, everything seems to have change with the school getting bigger, the selling of the Rectors house, Building of the new Vicarage plus the opening of the Rectors lawn as part of the graveyard.

We all know nothing could ever take place with out first getting permission to move old wood, but I don't think anyone would stop a voluntary pick-up of the rubbish as I was suggesting one weekend, you should see how bad it is

Dougie, thanks for the help in the cemetery with the notices. Were going to be involved in making a memorial site for the pit miners that have lost their lives down the pits, going to be on the plot opposite the Simms, quite a big project but hoping to have artefacts and brass plaques with other ideas involved. Cant do much yet until the lockdown is lifted but any ideas are welcome.

You may or may not have seen I asked for a few helpers to join me one weekend not as a VOLUNTEER but a HELPER to come and give your time after the lockdown to work under the supervision of Mr&Mrs Murphy, for a one off pick-up in the Dell, all you need is gloves and just fill one plastic bag, I guarantee you would fill it that quick you'll ask for another bag.

Dag 27-& All, Now lockdown is coming to an end of not being able to mix out doors still keeping 2 meters apart we could do with a bit of help, litter-picking in the Dell before all the under growth starts to grow it would only take 2 hours at the most with 5/6 people work one Saturday afternoon,

I would be there to help out and no one think they are to old if under 81, you would have to bring your own stuff

Been making these to help the wild life in the Dell, installed 8 nest boxes, plus 1 terrace block of 4 for the house sparrows, and 3 movable feeding stations, they are here for the time being for the children with Special Needs and learning difficulties to see as many birds as possible

Made so it will tilt either way to make it easier to get out if needed

Needs turning round couldn't manage it myself to high

Hopeful this will be first place to get food after coming from nest

Attached to the brick garages was a small brick unit which was equiped with the switches for the air raid siren which was positioned on a large telegraph pole at the back of this small building. between the garages and the large tree was a long building with double doors,I cannot remember it ever being used when I liver on Leyland Green Rd .

Peter-- when I was a lad nothing but fields on Leyland Green Rd and the only air raid station and siren was across from the School the one you must be thinking of was the siren for the outcropping for coal that they would sound when about to blast, a few short blasts followed by one long blast then the one to say they had finished blasting

Dagutd27 when the quacker pit was working they used to pump a lot of water out of the workings. If you walk to the top of the houses on LG rd there were fenced off areas in the fields these were sink holes and it was the same in the fields between Birch grove and Billinge road. Led to believe there is a lot of shifting sand in this area and when they pumped the water out the sand moved. Heard there were plans to build more houses on this land

Don't remember garages at back of S&S club must have been after I had left DG,
The only place I remember Tom & Esther living was the Corn-Mill where the new house's are on the right hand side, on the bend as you go up Spindle Hillock, my Grandmother would get us Pigs bladders blown-up as footballs from there,
---My grandmothers, Mum died at birth and at that time only a few people lived in the village and everyone child called her cousin Anne so she was welcome in every family house

Dag27 The old S & S club was the house of the Downhall family that lived on the Green, that is said how it got the name of Downall Green, the original Greenall family members still live on Rectory Rd I think she is 94 only talking to one of the family a few months ago she still still lives in DG

I know for a fact that the garages were there in 1965, which was after the time you left. Some werent in all that good condition though, so I would have expected they were put up in the late 50's. I think Kathryn Wildings grandfather had one at one time. He kept his Austin in it. You'll probably remember that being parked outside your house on Sundays in the 50's.
