I was looking on Albums and there are photos of the Star customers taken in 1980. Wondered when it closed

Which Star, I only know/knew one at Roby Mill

Wasn't there one in Bryn

I recall there being a Star in Bryn a few years back, i'm pretty sure it was the Star Hotel on the left down landgate. It was suddenly demolished around year 2002 and block of flats built there - It was alright in there too.

No it was Wigan Road, near junction with Nicol Road.

(Was next to what used to be Gorner's Garage)

Can only think of Cranberry being replaced with flats

Red Lion ceased to be a pub, but repurposed as a normal dwelling house.

Park is still there, I believe.

Golden Ball: gone.

But I haven't lived there for more than half a century, so rely on second hand information.

Peter you would know the Carhills,( they ran the Star for yonks) their lads went to our skool, Eddy Arows and it closed , I'm guessing late 1970's, I used to chuck arrows in there in 1975 so it was after that .

My claim to fame of chuckin' arrows was,
I was playing for the Golden Ball, ( thats a pub not an award) , we were playing the T'hinge, A top team from ashton and their star player was, ( I can't remember his name) but he was a top player, I was on last against him and it was neck and neck to this game, whoever won this game won game ,set and match, It was, round the board, 1 to 20 and bull,
I set off, double 1, 3,4, was my first 3 arrows, my next 3 was, double 5, double 10, double 5, 6 arrows chucked and only the bull to win, my next chuck was, somewhere on the board but not counted next was, Bullseye, smack int Belly, The crowd roared, We was the winners and the pub wa full of joy from the Golden ball team and sorrow from the thinge,
now normal practice after such an event was, to shake hands but, the thinge player , threw his darts on the floor and said in a loud voice, " never in't memory of Mon will that mon chuck like that again," that was sour grapes from a loser but, he was right, I never did that ever again,

used to like a pint in golden ball at bottom of rose hill, i think it was later called flanagans it was still going in 80s then it changed back to golden ball.

Bambam i was a regular there when Billy and Molly cross ran it, It was 1981 when it was refurbed and flanigans took it over,

Surely you throw for 11 onwards after double 5. It certainly was everywhere I played.

Peter, just re read your opening post, so yea I'm wrong about late 70's but, it cant be far off the 1980's, I was going to Golborne the other day and as I'm turning right into Golborne road , I could not think of the name of the pub there, It came to me later, it was the Rams yed, we chucked arrows in there too, I remember if you dropped a coin in the Rams yed at the bar, it would roll out of the door because the whole pub was leaning towards Ashton,

I joined Garswood Hall Angling club in 1961, the Star was the headquarters then, and for a few years after.

it was called the angel tomplum & it may have been billy hoof from the hinge . yep knew nearly all in the star & my guess is around mid 80s.

Tomplum Yvonne's cousin Lynne is married to Bernard Cahill. Next time I see them I will have to ask Bernard when it closed. It was my watering hole from 1975 till Closure and I played for their Pool team. During this time I also became a member of Garswood Hall BCC and I am still a member today.

Thank you Tom, it must have been demolished a long time ago, because going back I can only ever remember there being Gorners on that corner, the Mercedes dealer.

I found it on an old map, and it was actually on the main road, and not on the corner, of Wigan Road and Nicol Road, and to build Gorner's, they demolished the Star and some terraced houses

I had put 'Nicol Lane' at first in the post. Have gone back to edit, so as it reads 'Road' to minimise misunderstanding.

I think the Hingemakers was the pub where the landlord bought half price pies at closing time from a shop in Ashton and put them on the bar, free of charge, for men calling in for a pint after work. Alas the council do gooders stepped in and stopped the practice because he hadn’t got the required hygiene certificates etc.

Precisely, The present Arnold Clark's site covers both the original site of Gorner's, and the original site of the Star, but they did not demolish the Star to build Gorner's.

When I was 15, and still at school, along with my peers, we discovered that we were old enough to pass as adults, and get served in t pub.

Our first pub was The Angel, on Warrington Road in Ashton.

The then landlady was called Amy. (Don't recall surname)

A companion gave away that I was still at school, but Amy, bless her heart, still deigned to serve me.

By the time that I got to 18, I had given up drinking.

jimmy & vi cunliffe had the angel for a while until they got the swan in ince .

I recall a Jimmy Cunliffe from Rose Hill, though he was still a child when I left the district. Would it be the same person? He would be getting on towards 70 by now?

I worked with a Jimmy Cunliffe at the glassworks who became a Landlord ( The Swan at Hindley I think) However I think he would be nearer to 80 now.

There was an older Jimmy Cunliffe, who worked on Bryn Station in 1960's. He also used to cut hair.

I think he hailed from somewhere around Princess Road/Heath Road, Ashton.

On reflection the Jimmy I knew could have driven a machine at Rainfords. So long ago I get mixed up.

I remember Gorner's when it was just a big shed with just one petrol pump in 1950s, Bryn road was always call Long lane before they changed it

It is a long time since I met Billy and his family, and I am sorry to hear that he is unwell.

Billy Cunliffe Has been abroad to have a Knee replacement done. Led to believe he was in agony with the knee could not get it done on the NHS waiting list too long He managed to get to the Bowling Club last Sat for a pint with his mates

I lived at 253 Wigan Road our door just about lined up with the Star front door on the opposite side of the road. Handy for a pint

Yesterday i was speaking to a friend over here in Israel and she also has to go for a Knee surgery she has been told 6 weeks!! And she could have it faster but she wanted a certain hospital......
we have also been through Covid and with high numbers in hospital

SO if they are saying the waiting list are long in the UK because of Covid
some one is telling porkies
PS... we also have a very high immigration last year there was 27000
