There used to be a stall on Ashton market which sold paperbacks, and would buy them back from you when you had read them. (obviously for less money)

Which is how we consumed our James Bond before the films got made.

I got caught by school inspector, reading a Bond paperback concealed inside the schoolbook which I was meant to be reading! He was very good about it though: told me if that was what interested me I should try Len Deighton and John le Carré. Good advice it was.

I can't answer this question, because there are just too many films, which I think deserve to go on the list, because I like all types of films, but I would say that comedies are my favourite, and I like just about all of the films which have been listed in this topic.

Last week I saw a film on TV which had me laughing, it was 'The Hitman's Bodyguard' released in 2017, and it really did tickle me funny bone

Last night I watched the sequel to it on Amazon Video 'The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard' and I found that to be very funny too

I'll take a look at the hitmans bodyguard , I was just wondering what to watch and yooo have made my mind up , thank yooo TTS,

Bugger, because that filum is not on the ' available' list, I have to. rent or buy to watch it, So I'll wait till it comes round again,

I've thought of a few more of my favourite films and, as I don't have a TV, I rely on You Tube for some entertainment sometimes.

For those who like near disaster films, I'd highly recommend the following:

1. Voyage of Terror with Lindsay Wagner - about an epidemic on a cruise ship caused by an insect
2. Contagious, also with Lindsay Wagner - about an epidemic
3. Atomic Twister - about three tornadoes hitting a nuclear power station
4. The Stand (mini-series) by Stephen King about a global pandemic where only 1% of the population survive, some good, some evil
5. Red Alert with William Devane - about another nuclear power station

Gone with the Wind from the best selling book by Margaret Mitchell.

A film of great acting by both American and English Actors, American Civil War history, scenes and a outstanding film score and made at a time when films just before the second world war were coming out of the age of black and White films to colour.

For anyone interested in motor bikes, "The Worlds fastest Indian" is a must.

Once upon a time, I would have included Casablanca, but it is beginning to fade into the background: many good movies have been made since WW2!

That said, I used to look forward to it airing at Christmas, and I am disappointed when, in more recent years, it has not appeared.

BB not seen any of your original choices. Never been a big film fan, not got a lot of patience for sitting down to watch?

I can never find myself enjoying 'musicals'.

Not being negative, I know other people do enjoy them.

I tend to enjoy a film which 'transports' me, meaning that for the duration, my own reality/ambiance is suspended, and I emote as if I am in the context portrayed in the film. ie I temporarily buy into the fictitious reality.

Such an experience is killed stone dead if the cast suddenly burst into song and dance routines!

Bonnie and Clyde, You could hear a pin drop in the cinema after the ambush. White Heat Jimmy Cagney "Made it Ma, top of the world" the greatest gangster of all time.

No Country for Old Men [ love Cormac Mc Carthy books]

Whistle Down The Wind [as a child I was amazed to hear children tal with Lancashire accents and Hayley Mills dressed like me. Great story too]

One more of my favourites, and I don’t know how I could have forgotten about it, was the 1997 version of Titanic with Leonardo diCaprio and Kate Winslet. We watched it in the cinema and, right at the end when the boats returned, there were men and women in the audience actually sobbing their hearts out. Then I saw something I hadn’t seen for many years in a cinema which was, when the credits were going up, everybody stood up and applauded. Very emotional indeed.

However, I’ve also watched the 1958 colour version called A Night to Remember about the 1912 disaster with Kenneth More, which was more true to the actual story, which is also riveting; whereas the 1997 version was just a love story, but brilliant all the same.

I watched that film a few weeks ago and it lasted too long. Just looked and it is 2hours 43 minutes. Certainly not riveting stuff.

Wasn't gonna type on this thread till i noticed my fav film ever Caddyshack has been mentioned twice. The choc bar in the pool scene Is brilliant.
