Just read that newspaper article and what a load of codswallop Briar Homes have come out with!
“help reinstate a greater sense of enclosure to this part of Cross Street”
'ENCLOSURE!': Put a prison wall around Cross Street and it will do the same!
“The development will provide an effective screen to many of the unintentionally exposed rear elevations and it will mask much of the negative frontage to the Standish Centre."
Who are they trying to kid!
If they are so concerned about '...the negative frontage', then why don't they spend some money on the existing buildings and provide the area with '...a positive frontage'.
But! Nothing was done to stop anyone 'sticking' two relatively modern and bland looking supermarkets in the middle of Standish, which definitely have 'negative frontage' - certainly have never blended in, unobtrusively, to the architectural environment nor the period of many buildings of that area.
I know Cross Street very well and there are very few parking places and the street is narrow - also, there are double yellow lines on both sides of that street in some parts. Furthermore, Standish Library is in that street with limited parking space and there are a number of shops down the street with parking space in front for about six cars (for shop owners' cars, delivery vehicles and customers' cars etc).
Next, if you are heading to the motorway, Shevington, Wrightington, Coppull or through those places, you probably need to go through Standish centre traffic lights - which is a nightmare, especially in the 'rush hours' - unless you take another route, such as going all the way down to the Cherry Gardens, then heading down through Beechhill, then going through Standish Lower Ground and into Shevington.
Additionally, there are many terraced houses in Church Street with very limited parking space and some houses in Market Place with limited parking space; no large available land to build a car park. When these terraced houses were built, there was no consideration regarding any resident owning a car or any other type of vehicle.
St. Wilfrid's Church is in Market Place and opposite one end of Church Street, so when there are weddings or funerals taking place, then it is pure chaos to try and find a parking place.
So, I think, Briar Homes need to purchase the library, demolish it, turn the land into a helicopter pad and provide a permanent helicopter service for all residents.
By the way, it would be interesting to know who Richard Calvert is! (?)

I viewed the newspaper article via your 'link' basil and typed my response after reading the article.
But, for those people who cannot open the link, this could be a number of reasons regarding your laptop, mobile phone, security protection etc.

Didn't he adamantly argue that Standish is a TOWN and not a VILLAGE?

On about the Standish Village thing, I cannot comment on Tonkers behalf, but in my opinion just because someone who works for Wigan Council decides to call Standish a village, that doesn't make it a village.

Historically

Standish was given township status in the Middle Ages, and it merged with Langtree to become Standish-with-Langtree Urban District of Lancashire, which it was until 1974 when Wigan Metro was created.

That means it had and has the same status as Hindley and Ashton in Makerfield, so I would tend to agree that Standish is probably a town, but I am not 100% sure

To be totally honest TTT, I am not sure either.
In many official documents, it states village. But, I have seen it stated as a town. And! As I stated before, I referred to Standish as a town, simply because it seemed to cause less complications.
I have read, many times, Standish is a 'township'. But, this is still unclear as 'township' is used to describe a particular place as a territory of a town and a subdivision of a county.
A village is a rural habitation which is between the size of a hamlet and a town.
To be honest, it is difficult to, as to say, put your finger on.
But, I know one thing which is sure! There is absolutely no chance of trying to persuade some people about other possibilities - and, please believe me, I am definitely not applying this to you.

Anyway, let us just drop this discussion and return to the original topic of this post by bb and that is: Standish development.
I certainly find that: 'MORE HOUSES TO BE BUILT IN STANDISH', far more concerning.
