My Dad was born in Bryn on Wigan Road (in a house of course ;-)). His family goes back for at least a few generations in the Wigan area. He and his parents came to Canada in the 1920s. Would love to hear from anyone researching these names: Latham, Bibby, Nelson, Lowe, Darbyshire. Looking at Pemberton, Upholland, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Bryn, Goose Green.

I hope I can use your space to help me, my father died and left me two oil paintaings by E bent walker, who I know is a well known wigan artist, I am trying to find out more about the paintings. It has been suggested that these are portraits of Lord and Lady Sussex dated 1914 and signed by the artist. Anyone who knows anything about this artist, would they please be so kind as to contact me by email or tel 01254 243703

I came to live in Australia in September of 1967. I used to live in Avon Road, Norley Hall. My parents were Anne & Bill Winstanley and my brother's name was Geoff (he now lives in Sydney Australia). My Dad, (Bill) died in 1997. Mum is now 81 and lives close by on the Mornington Peninsula here in Melbourne, (our magnificent coastal region) about 45 kilometres south east of Melbourne.
I am married to Dan who is an American. We have 2 daughters Kelly (now 28) is married to Paul and they have two sons (3 & 1).
Jane is 27 and marrid to Cameron, a police officer and they have a baby daughter Chloe, who is 1 year old. Brother Geoff has two sons, Colin (30) and Phillip (27) neither of whom have married as yet.
I often think of Wigan and old friends and neighbours. I still have quite a few family members living in Wigan and plan on having my 8th trip back in the not too distant future.
Of all the friends we had, the Rencontre family from Upholland were the closest. Colleen and Clive (the parents) are both dead now, but I would love to get in touch with their children. Charlene, Charlotte, Leslie, Stephen, Linda and Roger Rencontre were their names, and I would dearly love to hear from any one of them, should they read this message, or if anyone there knows them, please give them my email address and ask them to get in touch with Carole (Winstanley)

I spend many many hours on this wonderful site, it is absolutely magnificent, and it's great to be able to take a trip down memory lane any time I like from the land downunder. Thank you for making all of this possible. Through your site some old neighbours have got in touch and we also speak on ICQ and use the webcam on Messenger. If you remember me and would like to get in touch, I would be only too happy to hear from you.

I stumbled across this site and am NOT a WIGANER, BUT what a wonderful RESPONSE FROM ALL OF YOU ABOUT THE PLACE - so many of you appreciating the down to earth friendliness.
My folks were Scots, but even having been born here 58 years ago I have found the South a pretty unfriendly place compared to up North and Scotland.
So good on you all for appreciating your background heritage - and the PIES sound GREAT!!!!

I am trying to find information on James and Ellen Wilson who lived in Wigan probably in 1877 to 1881, and also to know of 75 Frog Place still exists. Also looking for information on Wilson Hewitt who was headmaster at the Workhouse in 1907. Any info grately received and appreciated!
