My recollections of Christopher Home was about early 1970's. I was a student nurse then based at the Infirmary - I remember being allocated a 6 week placement there. Then it was private patients and a ward for routine eye surgery. It was always so quiet there. When I was packing a bag for a patients discharge I was mortified when her husband asked if I had been tipped. A very interesting introduction to private care at that time.

It would be nice for someone to comment on Phil Nelsons post mentioning the Christopher Home in Swinley Rd. Many Wiganners must have be born there, my sister Anne, born 1936 & my cousin Mary was born there too in about 1943/4. WW does a good job keeping memories alive !

I was born in Wigan during WW11 at Christopher nursing home. My parents moved to midlands where I grew up but I loved visiting my Grandparents in Wordsworth Ave and tromping over to Whitley fields. I have lived in Canada for 50 years but still have fond memories. Keep all memories of the town alive so myself and others can enjoy

Laughing gravy.
It seems few people like your posts, and I can see why.
But Doctors in UK Hospitals have to have R or L written om limbs so the wrong limb isn't operated on. NHS is infallible

Can’t seem to register so thought I’d comment here-
I’m researching my great great grandmother Mary Jane Walmsley (previously Jones, maiden name Wynne) wife of James Walmsley. She died in Wigan around 1938.
She had a troubled life- originally from Gloucestershire, she moved to Pontypool and had 4 children. After her marriage broke down she moved to Wigan with two children, Priscilla Ellison and Dennis Alfred Jones.
She also had a child with James Walmsley (named Ellen)
I’m wondering if Priscilla, Dennis or Ellen might have descendants in Wigan who might know why she moved to Wigan or any other stories about her.
