I put a message on earlier, re: living in New Fold (By Upholland Grammer School) which has since been demolished, also by attending St James C of E School, St James Road, my te achers were Miss Peers, (Art) Mr Winstanley (Geography) and Mr Davies was the Head Master, also Mrs Winnard. Maybe someone out there remembers them, because they were the classes that I was in. I also remembered Jean Roby I think she married someone named Huxley and had a butchers in Orrell, she was Miss Millie Gee's niece, Miss Gee used to do a lot of voluntary work for St Thomas's church in Upholland.

I find this great, I have just put a message on with no trouble at all, I did try to register and log in a while ago, but I hit all kinds of snags - I find Guestbook straight forward, with no hiccups - so I will stick to this in future.

I used to live in New Fold in Orrell in the late 40's, I went to St. James CE School in Orrell, we lived there for about 6 or 7 years, our next door neighbours were Jean Melling, Bessie and Majorie, I would like to get in touch with them if poss to see how they are doing, also if any of my school chums remember me, I would like to hear from them - I know this is a long shot but it's worth trying.

I found the information contained in the cemetery index very useful in finding the location of my relatives. I thank all who worked to compile this testament to the people of Wigan. Their efforts are greatly appreciated.

The list was also very useful as a document of social history. I was particularly struck by the high number of Wiganers surnames that are of Anglo-Norman descent.

What we consider today to be common English or Irish names like, Butler, Fitzsimmons, Haigh, Lyons and Mayor are in fact of French-Norman origin and have been subject to numerous spelling variations down the last 900 hundred years as the English clergy transliterated the surnames in slightly different ways.

So it is clear that the Wigan area was heavily populated with Norman people in the years that followed the invasion of 1066, in spite of the fact that Wigan was not chronicled directly in the Norman Domesday book census.

This would confirm recent tests which showed that males in West Lancashire carry over 50% genes of Viking origin. The Normans were originally Vikings and were given the land of Normandy by King Charles of France.
