Great site. My mother grew up in Wigan and is in one of the Walking Days photos for St. Micheals (In front of the Bowling Green Hotel). The date says 1950, however I think it may be closer to 1947.

A lovely site. Have only ever visited Wigan a few times, computer fairs and shopping, very recently when staying with relatives in Billinge. Loved it! Wigan was a joke when I as a girl in Liverpool very many years ago - not now!

I have just moved to wigan and think half the people of wigan can't drive at all. Most get done for drink driving and so on!.Everyday you see Ambulance flashing along the roads.

You have more one way street than any other place and get road blocks everyday at 2pm.

Are wigan roads safe for us?.

Your roads never change and are poor for people too cross.

Loved the info in the directories of 1869 and 1881, I actually found references to the Dawber family for the first time. I'm also interested in the Oldfields who had a brewery in Wigan in the 1880s.

What a great site Brian. I left Wigan with my family in 1966 but I have been back a few times 74,76,95, and 2002 and you seem to have captured the true spirit on wigan. Well done, I'll be back, not only to your site but to Wigan as well.

I love your site. I have been researching my ancestors who were born and raised in Wigan and area. Your old gallery gives me such insight into what life was like in the 1800's. Thank you for such a wonderful collection of pictures and information.

My paternal grandparents were born in Wigan and immigrated to Nova Scotia in 1906. I have researched my Wigan ancestors as far back as 1801. My sister and I spent a delightful week in Wigan in Sept, 2002 visiting cousins that we tracked down.
Learned a lot about Wigan prior to our trip by spending hours in your website. Thanks for all the info!!

My very first "Real Luv" Peter Carr came from Bacup. Used to catch the bus from Accy to meet him. I was 17yrs old He was 20. He lived with a Sister Bernice (or Bernadette)at 36 Tong Lane). I am talking 1958 or thereabouts. Must say your site is terrific, & I will visit often. Thanks. All the best for the New Year. May it be a peaceful & happy one for all.
