Alan asked about a butcher's shop. I remember it well from walking up Frog Lane to the Bluecoat and Wigan GS. It was run then by Colin Morris. There was a yard at the back which opened on to the old cattle market...or as we called it the "ment". We played all our football/rugby there.Hope this helps.

In answer to Gerry re the origin of Pie eaters. I was talking to a friend last week who said this originated in the 1920's when the Miners had to go back to work following the miners strike. Having to eat Humble Pie. Is this true

My name is Whelley!
My ancestors came over to the states in the 1800s. We ( my family) don't know much of anything about where our name came from or where we came from. We know we are Irish Catholics but that is about it. If anyone knows about immigration around the turn of the last century and would like to chat... please drop me a note. The Whelleys of America would appreciate it.

Exciting to see the pictures where my ancestors came from. The Deans and Abbotts came from and around there. Wish I could find more information on them. They are from Hindley,Haigh,Wigan,Astley and Westhoughton. I am not sure how close these places are to Wigan, but I know that Henry Dean was born in Wigan in 1844. Keep up the good work on this site. People are looking for roots more and more. Some of my roots are from Wigan and that makes it important to me. I would love to visit there and now it will definately be on my lists of things to do. Thanks, Brenda Spencer

Cool website but it doesent seem to really talk about the criminal side of wigan because i live in Aspull and suprisingly i see a lot of thugs walking round and a lot of vandalism and i would the council to do something better in Aspull than just build a clock!
