I think Ex Wiganers are very much like Ex 'Scousers' in that they all think Wigan is such a marvellous place but choose to live in horrible places like Australia, America, Canada, South Africa and New Zealand. I live near to Windermere and I wouldn't live in Wigan for a Gold Pig !

My mum was born in Wigan in 1943 and we are looking for family and friends. My grandmum was Edna A Howard also from Wigan. My grandmum's parents were William Howard Jr b. 1900 and Agnes Reynolds b.1900. William known as Billy died in a coal mining accident around 1933 and his parents were William Howard b. 1873 in Ince and Elizabeth from Wigan. Agnes Reynolds parents were James Reynolds b.1853 and Alice Bold b. 1852 both also from Wigan. James Reynolds had six children in England and when Alice Bold died in 1904, he remarries a Mary Hales from Birkenhead in 1905 and emmigrated to Chile where he had nine more children. James had a sister Mary who owned a laundry business in birkenhead and she married first a Nelson and then a Budworth when she widowed. Nothing is known yet about James's other two siblings Ellen or John Reynolds. Would love to hear from anyone who knew our family or are related to us. We have some photos to share and would love to recieve any. Hope to hear from you!!!!

Brilliant website! I lived in Wigan until i was 11, then moved to Newton. I went to Ince Central junior school in Ince. Lots of happy memories there!

Grew up in Wigan in 30's, 40's, 50's. Some marvellous pictures bringing a lot of memories. Glad the Grammar School is proving useful - it should be a listed building. Hope somebody has filled the gap left by the closing of Poole's pie shops.

Does anyone have info on people with these names: Whittle, Comber, Silcock & Stringfellow from areas around Wigan, eg Shevington & Standish areas? My great-grandmother, Annie Whittle, was born in Shevington c1885 to parents George and Matilda (nee Comber). Any bits of info greatly appreciated. Great website & love the photos!

Great site...makes me feel homesick. Grew up in Newtown but spent alot of my childhood in Wallgate at my grans house opposite the famous pier! Happy days.

Just found this sight and had a quick look around (looks good so far) I was bought up in Pemberton and went to "Tommy Moore" High school, I worked at Heinz 57 for 15 years untill 99 then sold up and moved to the I.O.M. Still got loads of family in Wigan and come over whenever I can, still miss the old town though.

Am now aged 71.Originate from Bryn,did schooling at St Peters Bryn & A-in- M secondary modern school.Peter Kane was a Golborne lad,used to train in early days over my grandads butchers shop in Heath St. (R.N.Hunter & son Family Butchers)

i am looking for anyone related to thomas butler born 5thsept 1875 his parentd were john and elizabeth butler his mothers maiden name was kilfoyle both parents came from ireland thomas had 2 sisters mary ellen and elizabeth maryellen married a durnell and move to leigh they has 1 daughter elizabeth his other sister elizabeth married joseph byrne unfortunately i have no details of thomas.
