I gather many of today's kippers never seen a smokehouse: pickled in brine, then dyed.

More likely that the salt will be the death of you than the bones.

Back in 1960's, when I was a student, I usually worked Christmas Post parcel sorting. Lots of Manx Kippers used to get sent through the post, just with address label attached. You could not do that now: the fish would just fall apart!
