It is pure common sense that any test done over a longer period will give a more accurate reading than a snapshot.
Either way it is widely regarded that the best team usually wins the league over the course of a season and we can all name teams who have won cups who were not.
I can also recall one bad decision in a knockout cup game giving a manager an entirety different career, not only changing the result of a game.
Anyway it was actually the scousers who used the league title winning method as the yardstick of the best team (until enough United overtook them ) then European cups strangely started getting brought into the equation.
