My father's generation, early half of the Twentieth Century, seemed to make a big thing of monologues.

I recall hearing them when I was young, particularly the 'Young Albert' stories.

People had their 'Party Piece', which they would learn well, and recite to entertain others. I think they were beginning to fade, but were given a boost in both World Wars, where groups of men were forced onto their own devices where entertainment was concerned.

I guess the wireless was already displacing DIY entertainment in the home, and of course the plethora of entertainment media which we now have followed.

There's some Stan Holloway 'Young Albert' on YouTube, but I remember there being much more stuff than I have found there.
