Yes that is the Yorkshire tradition: Yorkshire pudding with (usually) onion gravy, served as first course.

Currently I live in Yorkshire. When I had family visiting (from Greater Wigan), and we were out to dinner, they expressed some doubt when I ordered YP as my first course. I asked the proprietor of the eatery to confirm to them that it was a Yorkshire Tradition.
She said, "Some of them order it for starters, for main course, and again for dessert"!
