I remember it really well. My nanna lived in Ashton-in-M and I looked forward to the carnival every year. I particularly remember all the morris dancing troups and all those leading girls with loads of medals pinned across their chests! The floats had different themes. The huge shire horses would always make an appearance, pulling the beer barrel cart (Watney's Red Label??). It was a very colourful spectacle. It is a shame that the "community" feel has pretty much died out countrywide. My local village has a special day each year with side stalls and a few fairground rides but not a patch on Ashton Carnival which was like a small scale Notting Hill!
