You have to buy 10 litres of fuel to get it at the advertised .9 price. That said, 149.9 looks cheaper than 150, to a customer and that's why it's done.
A customer will be more attracted to a telly advertised for £299.99 than one up the road for £300.
The difference in fuel and televisions is the net profit.
Haydock Island could do one and a half tankers, 55,000 litres, a day. That's £55 cost on return at .1 pence reduction per litre.
You might think £55 a day isn't a lot to lose on that much fuel, but when the net profit is less than 5% it's a lot!
Fuel pumps are tested fairly regular, but they are allowed to be up to .5% out. That means for every £20's worth of fuel you buy you could only be getting £19.90 worth of fuel in your tank!
