To try and get back to the original topic of this post:
- I regularly visited Debenham's and it was one of my favourite stores. On average, I visited Debenham's once a week. I really liked the sport section in the basement area and often purchased items there.
Also, I bought many records from the music department, both LPs and singles. I preferred the music department when it was on the ground floor and in the corner of the building - I think, that part of the building had once been the wines and spirits department. But, I am definitely unsure about the ownership and whether it belonged to Debenham's or it was only part of the building.
Some people may recall the music department being where I have just mentioned and/or recall the department being in the basement; to the left as you walked down the stairs from Debenham's side entrance.
I also found the perfume and cosmetics department on the left as you entered via the main entrance very useful, because I usually found those Christmas presents for the women of all ages in my family - also, for the nice girlfriends I have been so fortunate to have had in my life.
Additionally, I spent many enjoyable moments with family or friends in Debenham's upstairs cafe.
The last time I visited Debenham's, which was not too long ago, I found it very disappointing as it had lost much of the beauty it had once had. The quality had greatly faded and it looked poor and unclean.
Hopefully, the building is going to be kept and the new owners are going to return it to the splendour it once had.
Let us try and keep those architectural splendours of Wigan instead of letting the bulldozers destroy the historical beauty of our town.
