gasmon: 'On holiday abroad a few years ago talking to an English couple, "Where do you come from" - Answer, in a very posh accent was "A village in Lancashire called Staaaandish"'
It isn't Standish which created the personality of these two people, it is the character they wished to project.
I have known quite a number of people who lived in Standish and I know some people who still live in Standish; they aren't snobbish at all.
But, there are some snooty people who live in Standish and I will certainly not deny that!
Additionally, I cannot understand why the couple would want to say to someone on holiday that they come from Standish, because the chances of knowing the place would be minimal. I can only assume that they really didn't want you to know where they came from.
After all, would it be helpful to tell some Wiganer that you come from Île Saint-Louis. Surely, it would be easier and more useful to tell them that you come from Paris.
Also, it is interesting to hear that the couple said, 'A village in Lancashire...'. Obviously, they were also unhappy at linking their village to Manchester.
