Hot Jets

Started by: priscus (inactive)

I understand that the exhaust temperature of aviation jets is in the order of 900 Deg C.

How do they manage to do vertical take-off and landing on decks of carriers without weakening the steel, or destroying its protective coatings? And what about the plane's rubber tyres being exposed to the exhaust?

Not a quiz question.

Found no obvious answers, so wonder if any of you know how they do so without such dire consequences!
