Why are there so many different ones and why do they cost so much. I'm sure one used to fit everything

How to fix an open circuit filament in a light bulb. I tried this in the 50s, you could get a few extra months use.

i-spy: We've just had to go on to the EU "saving" bulbs. Supposed to last a lifetime. Only lasted six months then had to buy new ones.

I bought a lightbulb marked "lifetime guatantee" and it broke after a month.
I took it back to the shop and the woman said they wouldn't honour the guarantee, as it was dead!
