Do you have an astro telescope yourself, britboy? Are you in a 'dark skies' location?

Yes and yes

The Milky Way passes over my house every night in all it's magnificent,
the northern lights are a frequent visitor.

For a couple of years, had some astro binoculars. So big and heavy they have to be used mounted (Tripod will suffice) you could not hold them steady enough to get a stable image.

Do not have dark skies, and always has been cloud covered when an event I would have viewed, so never been used in earnest.

The best northern lights display I saw was in 2001, a lot of overhead red and blue star bursts and a well formed shimmering green lace curtain.
I've seen them since but never quite as good

Britboy. The Milky Way doesn't pass over your house every night.

The Milky Way doesn't move. Your house passes under it!

It all relative and I don't have to be that pedantic, better to just enjoy the moment
