St John's C of E school Pemberton

Did anyone else go to this school? If so do you remember the teachers around the mid to late 50's Are any of them still with us? Id love to know.

Mrs Redfern ( a darling)
Miss Marsden
Mr Starkey the headmaster.

hi kameras/mr starky is no longer with us ,doubt very much ,mrs redfern and miss marsden still living . im 71 so its very unlikely they are still around . did you know nora anderton ?she as passed away,did a lot of good work for st johns and the church .i dont think i have ever heard of this happening before , but norah on her death was put in st johns church ,sopeople could pay their respects , a fitting tribute to her

I went to St Johns in the 70/80's and remember Miss Anderton well, also remember a chap they called Colonel, maybe her father?

Best school i went to that, loved it there.

badger blue,colonel clark ,he did a lot for st johns , lived in the nunnery on orrell road ,lovely man

I went to St Johns from 1949 -1956 .I am now 67 so i presume all the teachers from that time are long gone. My name was Barbara Johnson. Anybody remember me,I lived in Woodford Street.

I went to St Johns, About 1954 to "59 ? my name is Phil Eatock lived @ 99 Lamberhead Rd. I remember Miss Anderton (nora) Mr Starkey,etc.Left there and went to Lamberhead Green school for a few months then on to Abraham Guest. and the rest as they say is history.

I went 1952 til 1957. I remember Phill Eatock, you lived across the road from the gates, your dad was a policeman.

wasn't there a teacher named miss pythian.seem to remember phil eatock.i was there from 1952,lived in saddleback rd.

Mrs Aldridge,Mrs Miller,Miss Starkie, Does anyone remember the bell in the corner that you had to hit with an iron bar. I went from 1956 to 61. Some names I remember were Dorothy Winnard,Susan Creed, Phillip Heys,Janet Birchall,Ann Hall,Sandra Fisher,Harry Walls. Flippin eke they,re all coming back now.Oh and Geoffrey Ashurst and William Hammond. David Barker.

My friend was named first name not sure, but his surname was Banks he lived in the street just near the entrance to the church . Oooo this first name is haunting me now cant remember, There was a boy names Addington he hogged the cricket bat when we played cricket.

There are some photos under schools, (St John's, Pemberton),with a lot of comments from 'us lot'.

Still in touch with Phil, and some of the girls on St John's 1953-54 who are now in sunny Hindley and sunny Spain, as well as one of the lads now in US of A. We are now around 66 and loving it...but the more the merrier. Good luck, kameras.

i went to st Jons school in 61 untill i left to go to Pemberton GIRLS School some of the names i remember are Florence Burrows .Elizabeth Tickle. Susan Holmes . Thomas Bridge . John Penk . Neil Tickle ..Alan Shalicker .Joe Bragg.Ann Surtherland .Jillian think it was Winstanley .Christine Whittle . A girl called Hidey Elizabeth Snowchsner or some thing like that some forign sounding name..Joyce Preshaw. Dorren Parkinson Elaine ?Gough not sure of first name Colin Burgess i remember him having a bad accident at school one of the walls that were between the small and big playground fell on to him crushing him quiet badley. Carol Fisher those are to name but a few i will be racking my brains now thinking about who was in my class.. i remember some of the teachers Miss Phithian ,, did not like her she used to frighten mw with one of her looks she was from what i can remember her quiet stern .. miss Anderton Miss Starky she was headmistrees of the infants ..and her Brother Mr Starky was the Headmaster of the Juniors MISS Anderton seemed to be a Giant of a Lady but i liked her dont remeber the names of any others.. I DO REMEBERE WE HAD TO GO TO THE Church once a week for assembley i can just see us all now in our long lines trapsing through the school yard to go next door to the church . we did not have to go far can stil remember sitting in our lines in the pews having been warned we had to be good...

was transistion there then rbilly ? in other words for dunces was on the stage in hall ,probally not there when you went ,miss anderton was nice ,she used to call for her petrol when i worked at the petrol station ,would allways ask politly would i put her petrol in when it was raining allways got a £1 off her ,miss marsden she had her classroom leading off the hall .

never heard of transitions ecmdjmany a time walking up lamberhead road dilly dalliying taking our time and hearing the School bell go of and have to run our little socks of so we would be not to late

Mrs Redfern was indeed a darling, as you say. I remember being so comfortable in her class, she had a farm which was delightful to me. I think it was in her classroom that posters from Shell were around the walls showing different seasons in Britain, birds , animals and plant life. Many years later when I emigrated to Canada and was homesick I wrote to Shell books and they informed of a book which contained those scenes from the posters. I bought it and I still have, and look at that book today.

What happy times, what...

I was at St John's from 1953-1959 then moved to Abraham Guest. I was in the same class as Phil Eatock (mentioned previously in this thread) both at St John's and Abraham Guest.

Some memories:-
-separate Girls-Infants and Boys playgrounds, Girls chasing boys in the girls playground until boys sent back to their own yard.
-Playing "Skilly" with the girls.
-Marble season on the dirt area in the boys playground.
-Daily morning assemblies.
-Regular trips to St John's church.
-School and Church choirs.
-Prefects at the age of 10/11 years.
-Learning times-tables by rote, whole class chanting. Hearing other classes doing the same.

My first day at school,in Miss Starkies class,she wore a gray suit and smelled of lavander. We soon learned to be good in her class,she was very strict.

hi Fred, I did not think I was in any photo on WW, but my elder brother Graham Rigby is.
Some people in my class were Philip Eatock, Roy Cottom, Kenneth Ashton, Billy Pennington, Christine Kirk, Steven Brimilow, Derek Ishmael.

i dont remember having any photoes taken when i was there in the 60 s

That's a pity, rbilly. I am so pleased that we did have photos taken in the fifties because we have something to look back on.

I took many photos of my kids and grandchildren when they were small and they always complained when I pointed the camera at them, but now we look back and say 'Ahhhhh'.

I remember when we all had toqueue up for cod liver oil and orange juice. We all used the same spoon and never caught any harm from it.
