Cemetery?
Does anyone know or have an idea how to get in touch with Wigan Cemetery Index, because they have some names mixed up on the WW cemetery search

Many thanks to the Friends of Wigan Heritage Service, in particular Freda Chorlton for her hard work in producing this index.

It may not necessarily be the person who made up the index but the person who recorded it in the actual cemetary registers I have come across this before as the original registers are available to view in the museum

My uncle Richard’s grave on the index says Michael, I was just wondering how to correct it

My father and grandma’s surnames are correct but my granddads surname is incorrect. How do I change that?

If the names on the index match the names on the original records/registers I dont see any way that the index can be changed, as that would then make the searchable index wrong

JAMB, the records have to be wrong, I know my Uncle Dickie, I have news papers and Navy records of Richard Speakman. He was my nans brother who was killed at 19, he had no children and was the only Speakman.
He has a navy gravestone with his name on.

Yes Jake I know that as I said in one of my replies I saw that in the Wigan Observer, but the people that make up the index can only put down what is in the original entries , I will be going to the museum next week and I will have a look at the original cemetery records to confirm, I realise it can be frustrating but there are thousands of records over the years with either wrong names, misspelt names or mistranscibed names, that is what gives researches the biggest headaches

it is very likely the index was done by volunteers at the museum , make enquiries there
