Came across a site today called when we were young, memories of life in Wigan during the 50’s and 60’s, never seen it before, there are 97 pages of people and places we loved.

Just had a quick look, really interesting. Anybody with an hour to spare would find some facts to enlighten them?

Some of the “facts” are just rumour. Wrong about John Charnley, for instance.

"Sir John Charnley pioneered the hip replacement operation"

No he didn't!

And that's regardless of where he was 'from' (which wasn't Wigan, contrary to what plastic Wiganers think!)

Unbelievable, the amount of buildings that have come and gone. The one thing missing is the girls high school, which I think only lasted about twelve years. Also no metion of the big freeze of 1963?

riocaroni, the length of time depends on which school you are referring to. But, neither school only lasted around twelve years.

The old Wigan Girls' High School building, which is on Wigan Lane, is still standing; it is now Mab's Cross Primary School - also referred to as Mab's Cross Community Primary School. This school opened as WGHS around 1916; so it has been a school for more than one hundred years - and, hopefully, it is going to be there for at least the next one hundred years as it is a very nice building.

The Wigan Girls' High School, which became Whitley High School, was built in the 1960's (circa 1965) and closed in 1990. Shortly after closing as a school, the building was badly damaged by fire and it was demolished a short time after.
As many people on WW probably know, there is no school there now as it was decided by certain people that houses would be built on the land. Some schools (Whitley High, Whelley Middle, Gidlow Middle...) in and around Wigan were demolished at around the same time as, it was understood, there was no longer a need for so many schools as the birth rate was much lower than in the previous decades.

Ian, don't forget Thomas More. I was referring to the new girls high school and I did state I think, memory not what it used to be.

riocaroni, I am extremely sorry if you were under the impression that I was trying to ridicule you, I definitely was not! Please accept my apologies regarding the misunderstanding.
I typed the information about the two schools to help those WW readers who are interested in this kind of knowledge and who are unaware of some of the facts.

"Ian, don't forget Thomas More."
Actually, I know very little about St Thomas More, because I wasn't born in that area of Wigan and I never went to that particular school. By the way, I assume (from your words) St Thomas More School is also no longer standing.

Q: What do The Right Honourable Sir Brandon Lewis and Saint Sir Thomas More have in common?

A: Both have been MP for Great Yarmouth.

"Actually, I know very little about St Thomas More, because I wasn't born in that area of Wigan and I never went to that particular school."

Wigan Academics, eh.?

Your words, which you typed not too long ago, have no meaning at all! This is because, the topic was about schools and not people. I typed detailed information about two other schools and not about St Thomas More, the school.

Additionally, at college and university, there was no focus on studying the history of that particular school.

Also, your words are incorrect, unless Sir Thomas More is still alive. As far as I know, without Googling it, he died quite a number of centuries ago.

But, as you are well aware of, there is always Google to satisfy one's arrogance. Therefore, instead of being honest, I could have Googled the information about St Thomas More High School and placed the information on this site in an effort to try and impress naive people that I know more than I truly do.

I've always been aware of the presence of Thomas More School in Newtown. And I'm from St.Helens (borough!), have never lived in Wigan (town!), but don't go around with my eyes shut!!
For a so-called "Wiganer" to not know about a school in his home-town's vicinity is ridiculous!

Also, you seem to lack the ability to understand the language which we use. I did not type any word to indicate that I do not know anything about St Thomas More School.
I know where St Thomas More School was, the size and structure of the school, the colour of the uniform and more - and, I have never lived in Newtown.

Additionally, it is your childish behaviour which is causing members to leave this site.
For a 70+ year old man, you certainly greatly lack the maturity one would expect of somebody of that age.

I've just found the site but for some reason it won't let me save the page.
The first few pages I read were excellent, looking forward to reading the rest.
I put into Google," When We Were Young. Wigan." I found it straight away.
Good luck

Why should I leave?
This is not the first time tonker has typed words to attack me, there has been many times and without reason.
If you scroll up to where I first posted on this page, you will see that it was in reply to riocaroni's words about Wigan Girls' High School.
My following post was, again, in reply to riocaroni's words which directly followed my first post.
Neither of us (riocaroni or myself), mentioned anything about tonker or about anything he had typed. But, for some strange reason, tonker copy-pasted one part of my post and then typed a sarcastic remark followed by a number of silly "Smilies".

Quite a while ago, I began to see that Stardelta's words were possibly close to the truth in regard to certain behaviour (glorification or condemnation) on this site, and his words were similar to: "It isn't what you post on this site which matters, it is who posts it."

I am not the only person who tonker finds some kind of strange sadistic pleasure in attacking as he often attacks one poster who used to post frequently. This person does not post as often as they used to.

Please notice that tonker has not typed anything in response to your words, nor has he typed anything in response to retep1949's words.
I wonder how long it would have taken tonker to have typed some negative comment if I had typed those words?
Also, notice how few people have commented on what tonker typed.

Please accept my gratitude for your kind support and advice.
