Lord and Sharman (Slipper Works), Pemberton

I wonder if anyone on here ever worked at the Shoe factory in Pem. I worked there from 1969 until 73.
I think at its peak they had about 300 employees. I started work in the crepe room, later working in the packing room, heel room and Vulcan before returning to the crepe room. I can't say I enjoyed it but made some good friends. Ernie Files was my first foreman and Cliff Houghton my manager. I worked with the 3 Moore brothers; Albert, Bobby and Ray. Others in the crepe room and men's room were Ernie Hilton who eventually had his fingers cut off on a press, Frank Lloyd, Bill Hughes, Bill Roby, John Forshaw, Dougie Ingrey senior and junior, Chris Ashcroft, Ray Greenalch (who became a best friend), Bill Duckworth, Margaret Brocklebank, Brenda Mayers, Joe Reeves, Bill Worthington just to name a few.
We would play football on the pitch at dinner time... must have a lot of energy back then. We also had a good canteen with cheap food. I think there was a small memorial garden too. It would be nice to hear from former employees and their stories.

When I was at Pem caravans, we used to stand outside at dinnertime and the slipper works girls used to walk up Ormskirk road trying to tempt us into asking them out.
I wasnt tempted but a couple of the lads were and ended up getting married .

There were about 200 girls worked there. Guys were always hanging around at dinner time to chat them up.

An old friend of mine Cliff Grundy did a spell there. Around the 1960s

The name rings a bell but I can't picture him. I guess most of Pem worked there at some time. My mother and uncle worked there for a while. I only had 4 years there, but my family have a history of shoemaking/repairs including the ones presently in Hallgate.

Does anyone know of my sister ANNE WINSTANLEY she worked at the slipper works for a few years she has a lot of tales about the time she worked there.

I don't remember Anne Winstanley, but there were 300 employees so it was hard to know everyone.
I often wonder what happened to the small memorial after the factory was demolished for housing.

Fat Mick: The Slipper Works girls would never venture so far up Pemberton at dinner time.

They had no reason to and didn't have the time anyway.

Oh yes they did and my workmate married one, I took one to the pictures a few times, but then she runaway from home and the Pem bobby came and knocked on my door to see if I had runaway as well.
We only used to get half a hour dinnertime but it was still enough time to get to Industrial valves canteen for our dinner some days.

Has it not been put in ST.MATHEWS church yard some where i may be wrong but seem to recollect something being placed in there worth asking on here does anyone know what happened to it .G.B

I noticed it when i was last in there my brother and i were in the churchyard searching fro our grandparents grave when we came across the slipper works stone , sadly after that visit my brother passed and he is there permanent now ,still did not find grandads grave either virus over will continue the search .stay safe bye G.B.

Good luck in your search GB. I too have been searching for my ancestors' graves and it has taken me down to the Forest of Dean where my great grandparents came from. Apparently my great grandad came to Wigan as a mining engineer - we probably paid better wages up here! He must have taken some stick in Wigan with his Gloucestershire accent!!!
